Although the English folk scene of the late 1960s remained fairly obscure and never attracted great numbers of fans in this country, the groups and artists who formed the foundation of the style have been remarkably durable. It has been a quarter century since Thompson officially left Fairport Convention, but he and the other members have remained close, often collaborating. They have since worked together on many a project, and Danny Thompson wrote five of the eleven pieces on Industry, all instrumentals. That provided the starting point for this collection of songs that consider work in a steel mill, labor disputes, the desolation of hopeless unemployment and the changing landscape the after the end of the industrial era.Danny Thompson weaves together a curious blend of his jazzy acoustic bass, Richard Thompson's famously lugubrious guitar, and the brass bands that were often part of the mines and factories of England in the Industrial Revolution. The result is one of the finest albums in the career of either artist. Both men spent a fair amount of time researching the effort, visiting old mining and factory towns, and seeing the museums some have turned into.Joining Thompson and Thompson are another Fairport Convention stalwart drummer Dave Mattacks, Steeleye Span fiddler Peter Knight, plus Tony Roberts, who plays woodwinds and has been a guest on albums in this style going back to the late 1960s.Chorale sets up the bleak mood with its curious combination of instrumentation, including the brass, strings and hints of Irish traditional. The first of Richard Thompson's songs is Sweetheart on the Barricade, an interesting tale about the women who were part of the labor movement, picketing at considerable risk of reprisal. The use of the brass band toward the end of the piece is quite effective.Since the demise of a coal mine served as catalyst for this album, mining is a recurring motif on Industry.Danny Thompson's instrumental composition Children of the Dark was inspired by the way children used to work in the mines, being given one light that would often fail by the end of the shift, leaving the child mine workers in the dark.CD is Big Chimney about working in a steel mill. The musical backing hints at the hot noisy furnaces of the workplace. One of the most downright interesting pieces on the album is Saboteur. It's the story of a disgruntled factory worker who grows to despise the machinery that rules his life, and vows to sabotage it.The musical setting reflects this enchantment with the mechanics. The closing of the Grimethorpe colliery is treated by each of the Thompsons.Pitfalls is Danny Thompson's instrumental take, and it's probably the least effective of his pieces.Their lives were often harsh, but the message of the album is that the loss of those jobs can be even harsher. It was recorded in England in the same studios and with the same engineer, Jerry Boys, who worked on some of the old Fairport Convention material. The mix is certainly a huge improvement over the excessively quirky sound of Richard Thompson's last album produced by Mitchell Froom. This album was too creative and interesting to have any hope on the major label for which Richard Thompson usually records, so Industry was released by the independent Hannibal label, making it a bit harder to find. This review may not be copied to another Web site Orville Gibson H.Guitar Award the day before the Grammy ceremony. His set lists varied from The Who's Substitute to Hank Penny's Don't Roll Your Bloodshot Eyes at Me, intermingled with his original material.Songs he previously played with an electric band were pared down to fit his acoustic format, and he alone stood center stage with nothing between him and his fans. The result was an endearing public, one who appreciated his quick wit, wry humor, and extraordinary talent.Although they'd known each other since the 60's, the two Thompsons were great friends before bandmates.Pentangle, Danny's other musical associations include work with John Martyn, Nick Drake, Little Walter, Josh White, Donovan, Cliff Richard and even Engelbert Humperdick, among others.Since 1993, Danny has toured extensively with Richard, in both acoustic and electric band formats.Often dubbed by longtime fans as a wonderful starting point for the novice, it showcases all eras of Thompson's varied and extensive work.In 1995, the latest of several Thompson tribute albums was released, called Beat the Retreat.Such releases provide Thompson's loyal fan base with supplemental entertainment between commercial releases, and Thompson himself with a less structured vehicle of expression. In 1996, Richard released his first 'double album' with you?Showcasing his versatile abilities in both acoustic and electric formats, Thompson devoted one disc to each.In 1997, a joint project Richard and Danny Thompson had been nurturing for some time was released, simply entitled Industry.Thompson's youth, the Millenium. That they failed to print his list among others submitted by rock's luminaries did not deter, but instead spurred Thompson to develop and present an evocative, entertaining repertoire. The familiar foursome toured U.Old Kit Bag, as well as older favourites. The Aces' Song: Israelites. The next internet only CD, Faithless, was released in July, spotlighting another vintage and the oddly titled "Kitty: Tommy, Quick Get up.Steeleye Span's Peter Knight who plays violin on several tracks and whose accompaniment to Richard Thompson's guitar is particularly moving and effective on "Children of the Dark" and "Pitfalls".The lyrics on songs like "Lotteryland", "Last Shift" and "Saboteur" are on a par with the finest of RT's compositions and the listener is left in no doubt as to where Thompson's sympathies lie.The rich combination of instruments give the album a progressive or experimental feel while still retaining the qualities that mark all of Thompson's material. The production is excellent and even the sleeve notes are of superior quality.Industry is an essential part of any Richard Thompson collection and one that should widen his appeal to a larger folk music, and expecially northern folk, since North seems to have penetrated the pure roots of man in its sonorities, singing with the voice of trees, birds, and raw rocks, and playing with plastic, warm instruments which have the voice of elements. When we first heard the music of "Pentangle", we thought that was the best and most complete music we had ever heard. We are going to reach you in London the next June, hoping we could embrace you and thank you personally. You can listen to our our covers at www.Hey Maestro, what a touch!Good luck with the Pentangle reunion! Thanks for the add time."Drifting Through the Days" paints a bleak and miserable portrait of unemployment."Last Shift" explores the helplessness of workers doing their rounds for the last time. With surprising contrast, "Big Chimney" rocks and swings contagiously.Even the lingo seeps in with words such as "Santander", "Blue Billy", "barrow", and "sows"."Saboteur" contains some of the album's most provocative lyrics.Faced with the monster, he finds that he can't do it.For one, the album features a lot of horns.Second, out of 11 songs on "Industry" 5 are instrumentals (all composed by Danny
