has he achieved the highest distinction afforded in the wine industry, but he is one of nine in the world to have passed his examinations on his first try.As the resident Master Sommelier at the Little Nell in Aspen Colorado I am constantly reminded that I have the greatest wine job in the world. We are fortunate to meet interesting people from all parts of the world and be they old mountain men or Nobel Laureates they all bring their knowledge, their enthusiasm, and their thirst. While sharing of their knowledge, indulging their enthusiasms and quenching their thirst they also field many queries. In my field these inevitably have to do with wine. These and many like them are the questions that I hear each evening and I attempt to give thoughtful consideration to each one.In doing so, and over time, I keep coming back to the idea and practice of blind tasting as a means to answer all of these questions and more. However, while it certainly takes time and discipline to become an accomplished blind taster, I am a big believer that each of us can become one and in doing so we can tune in what exactly is happening in a wine and, over time, the world of wine as a whole. The caveat is that we also need to drink different. This is to say each time we have a glass of wine, make it something new. Then, second, as we work through all of these different wines we need to focus our attention on all of the numerous and subtle things that they have to say. This is also something that I teach with wine tasting sessions that I put on with our restaurant and hotel guests and we have found that it really is possible and a lot less hard than it seems.Winter class series will begin Thanksgiving week and I would encourage all of you to come explore the world of wine with us!Sincerely, Richard Montagna's wine list is updated periodically, and was last updated Jan 10, 2008.To download Montagna's Wine List, click the PDF Link to the right.Sign in to get personalized by Richard Betts, of course! This is an album which, to me, mixes hillbilly, bluegrass and country and has some jazz and swing influences.Just six tracks and only 35 minutes of music, but what a great album this is.Betts has a light, but fine voice which suits the songs and is joined by some fine bluegrass singers and instrumentalists (The Rambos and The Poindexters to name a few) and also Chuck Leavell, who played on Eric Clapton's Unplugged album. The music is unique and should be part of the collection of every fan of southern music.Highway Call with a similar effort. Was this review helpful Capricorn Sound Studios, Macon, Georgia. This album is a true country album from a rock n roller. He does it with finess and skill that most musicians do not posess. This is a great country, bluegrass, string music album. The album "Highway Call" is an excellent choice for those that appreciate the Dicky Betts clean style guitar sound. He has great talent and this album showcases it.Professor Betts's research interests include national security, military strategy, and international conflict.Betts's first book, Soldiers, Statesmen, and Cold War Crises (Harvard 1977) was issued in a second edition by Columbia in 1991.He is the author of three books published by the Brookings Institution: Surprise Attack (1982), Nuclear Blackmail and Nuclear Balance (1987), and Military Readiness (1995).He is the coauthor and editor of three other Brookings books: The Irony of Vietnam: The System Worked (1979), Nonproliferation and U.Foreign Policy (1980), and Cruise Missiles: Technology, Strategy, Politics (1981).He is the editor of Conflict After the Cold War: Arguments on Causes of War and Peace, 2nd edition (Longman 2001).His writings have earned five prizes, including the Woodrow Wilson Award of the American Political Science Association for the best book in political science.Among his recent publications is "The Soft Underbelly of American Primacy: Tactical Advantages of Terror," in Political Science Quarterly (Spring 2002), reprinted in September 11, Terrorist Attacks, and U.Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the National Security Council, and the Mondale presidential campaign, Betts has been an occasional consultant to the National Intelligence Council and Central Intelligence Agency.Council on Foreign Relations, publisher of Foreign Affairs.Because without political incentives for restraint, policymakers have lost the ability to think clearly about defense policy.Washington's new mantra should be "Half a trillion dollars is more than enough."BETTS is Director of the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University and an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.President Ronald Reagan sought in 1988.Rip would start scratching his head, however, when he discovered that the Soviet empire and the Soviet Union itself had imploded more than 15 years ago and that Washington now spends almost as much on its military power as the rest of the world combined and five times more than all its potential enemies together.Told that Pentagon planners were nonetheless worried about overstretch and presidential candidates were vying to pledge even higher budgets and even larger forces, Rip's head might just explode. The current strains on resources and forces are due, of course, to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.Vietnam, a bigger and bloodier conflict than any the United States has seen since.Department of Homeland Security, whose functions would be handled by the Defense Ministry in many other countries. How would one answer Rip's inevitable questions about what is going on?One might note that everything costs more these days.Nobody younger than 80 can remember a peacetime United States without vast standing armed forces, even though that was the norm for the first 150 years of the republic.American values but without considering the full costs and consequences of their grandiose visions. The result has been a defense budget caught between two stools: higher than needed for basic national security but far lower than required to eliminate all villainous governments and groups everywhere. The time has come to face the problem squarely. But a more modest and sensible national security strategy can and should be purchased at a lower price.Threats, opportunities, and risks are always uncertain, but the economic costs of maximum preparedness are definite.Strategic solvency is an equation with several variables, and during the Cold War, U.Kennedy and President Reagan tried to close the gaps between ambitious objectives and limited resources by raising defense spending.President Richard Nixon closed a similar gap the opposite way, trimming military commitments through burden sharing and diplomatic realignments.Richard Betts found success as a sommelier, and he's proving equally adept at winemaking.Richard Betts, 36, was born in Syracuse, N.He spent two years as sommelier at Janos, building up the wine program there before moving in 2000 to take the sommelier position at Montagna at the Little Nell in Aspen, Colo.Wine Spectator Grand Award winner since 1997.Patterson, both of Boulder, Colo.Wine Spectator: When did you first realize you wanted to work in the wine business?Richard Betts: In my last week of grad school, defending thesis, I had a glass of vino that vividly recalled a specific dinner many years earlier in Italy and that was it!It's a deep and soulful soup but it also has an astringent tannic factor of its own.Being a big believer in what grows together goes together, I look to Austria or southern Italy for a partner, bearing in mind the nettles and artichokes respectively. It's also very Italian inasmuch as it pairs with anything on the table with a smile. This translates to us not marking wine up according to the standard of the industry. Our wines are often a third less than other places, if they can be found elsewhere at all.Well it is no secret that I drink my weight in French wine all too often but, with that said, I really enjoy wine the world over. This is the intellectual value of wine, the ability of this singular alcoholic beverage to communicate to us a grape, a place, its geography, geology, history, people, cuisine, and so on and so forth.Nothing else can do this like wine. If, however, the wine cannot do this then I am not interested. If we see wines becoming more and more similar, this is disturbing.WS: Do you see wines becoming more and more similar these days? However, the world of wine is expanding in new places and being renewed in many places that have had long histories but have not been recognized for some time. From Arizona to Greece, the wines have never been better.RB: As for reconciling all the places I work, the approach, actually, is exactly the same in each place. It is like making a great tomato salad. This is the intellectual value I spoke of earlier.DOWNLOAD FILE
