2.Furay's best known songs, "Pickin' Up The Pieces" and "Good Feelin' To Know", however, have reached classic status and appear on many country compilations.Al Perkins, the group's pedal steel guitar player, introduced Furay to Christianity, before poor record sales led to the band's demise.Furay then formed The Richie Furay Band, with Jay Truax, John Mehler, and Tom Stipe, releasing the album I've Got a Reason in 1976, which reflected Furay's newfound beliefs. To support the release of this album Furay formed an alliance with David Geffen and Asylum Records.Furay assured Geffen that his album would be Christian influenced but would not be an attempt to preach his newfound beliefs. The album, along with subsequent releases failed to chart. After two tours during the late 1970s, he hung up his rock and roll shoes in favor of a call to the ministry. He most recently toured as an opening act for America and Linda Ronstadt during the Summer of 2006.This page was last modified 02:15, 5 January 2008.See Copyrights for details.Richie Furay's music has always meant that much to me.From his days in the seminal Buffalo Springfield, through the exhilierating Poco years, into the confusion of The Souther Hillman Furay Band, on to his 70's solo releases and his present day Christian music, Richie Furay is one of the most influencial icons in the history of rock. And none of his music was wasted on me or millions of other die hard music fans. Please share in the wealth of wonderful music given us by Richie Furay.Am SureBrand New Release

Richie Furay started his musical career playing folk clubs as a solo artist in the 1960s, as well as with bands like the Monks and the Au Go Go Singers (which included Stephen Stills in the lineup). After meeting Neil Young they formed Buffalo Springfield with Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin.Poco recorded its first album, Pickin' Up the Pieces, and Meisner quit soon afterward.Love Song), and Tom Stipe. He rejoined Poco in 1990 for their comeback album, Legacy, which included the hit single "Call It Love."The band was thrown together on the Los Angeles boulevard in early 1966, when Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, two folk refugees from New York City, were stuck in traffic and spotted a hearse with Canadian plates that obviously wasn't headed to a funeral .We picked up Dewey Martin for the drums, which was my idea, four or five days later."With Young was fellow Canadian folkie Bruce Palmer, who would become the band's bassist; like Stills and Furay, the two of them were just "tooling around...Buffalo Springfield, taking the name from a steamroller they noticed on a West Hollywood street. They had found one another in West Hollywood, and it was there, on the Sunset Strip, that they would move into the fast lane. They quickly built their reputation on the hip local scene with their now legendary gigs at the Whiskey a Go Go and generated a mighty buzz in the freewheeling record industry of the time.Atlantic Records, still a groovy indie then, landed the band for it's Atco label and sent it into the studio with managers Charles Greene and Brian Stone.Fans deemed the debut, Buffalo Springfield, staid in comparison to their routinely electrifying gigs; the album arrangements leaned more toward folk than rock, with an emphasis on the harmonies of Stills and Furay."Go and Say Goodbye" veers well past folk into the kind of country that's called Americana these days.Young composed the other five, although he left most of the lead vocal chores to Furay.Young's "Do I Have Come Right Out and Say It," featured a plaintive Furay vocal, is beautiful simple pop songwriting of a kind Young wasn't known for in those days.As the owner of a hearse, he generally displayed the sort of prenatural melancholy that marked another album's songs, "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing."For the world at large, "For What It's Worth," was Buffalo Springfield.Until then my view of the group had been restricted to Stills, blond and dapper in a Beatlesque kind of way, backed by befringed L.AM Good Guys, the band was there to deliver the Top Ten goods.Beach Boys, who were in their Smiley Smile phase.Neil Young wrestling out of his guitar all those twisted sounds that would become his signature. It also featured Young's most ambitious productions, "Expecting to Fly"and "Broken Arrow."Most significantly, the band was producing it's own sessions, an unusual setup at a time when a record company rarely left a band alone in the studio."My nerves couldn't handle the trip .....Bassist Jim Fielder filled in, before Messina signed on for what would be the bands last months.Topanga Canyon pot bust that resulted in misdemeanor charges for Eric Clapton along with Young, Furay and Messina, the band officially called it quits, a scant eighteen months after forming."Last Time Around", the final Buffalo Springfield album, was pieced together by Messina and released after the breakup. But you know me and I miss you now."It's about the moment after a band becomes the biggest buzz on pop culture's most famous boulevard. It's about life going on.Richie Furay and bassist Jim Messina remained to complete the group's swan song, Last Time Around.Just one day after signing to Epic in early 1969, Meisner suddenly left the band, apparently over personality clashes; he later joined the Eagles.Poco's debut, Pickin' Up the Pieces, was released in June of 1969.The group was back to being a quintet in 1970 with the addition of bassist Timothy B.Schmit, whose arrival coincided with the recording of their second album, Poco.Deliverin', which rose to number 26 and yielded the minor hit "C'mon."The band made one renewed effort, Crazy Eyes, their most accomplished studio album to date; released late in 1973, it became their most successful work.Grantham followed him out of the band in January of 1978, eventually becoming Ricky Skaggs' drummer.Nash alumnus, came in on keyboards in December of that year, and Poco was once again a quintet. It was matched by Cotton's "Heart of the Night," which got to number 20 during the summer of 1979.Every member of the group, not just the front trio of J.He then played with Glenn as a duo and when Frey joined the Eagles, J.Cry Now and The Fast One (all 1973), Faithless Love (1974) and Prisoner in Disguise and Silver Blue (both 1975) (all recorded by former girlfriend Linda Ronstadt).Perkins had played steel on sessions for the Flying Burrito Brothers, Alex Harvey, Rita Coolidge, Country Gazette and the Eagles.Grinel had appeared on albums by Joe Walsh and Keith Moon.Following this album, J.Only Lonely, on Columbia.James Taylor for a Top 15 Pop hit, Her Town Too.In 1980, he appeared with Poco at their reunion concert.Slow down as you approach the gate, and have your change ready....Poco invited Gram Parsons
to join them at one stage and were a solid foundation stone in the whole
new country thing that Parsons became the figurehead of and that the Eagles
would so readily exploit.Souther, Hillman, Furay
Band, an attempt to duplicate the supergroup success of Crosby Stills and
Nash. Two albums in and Furay was bandless again. That new found
faith would eventually lead Furay to where he is today, pastor of Calvary
Chapel in Boulder, Colorado. Not that he has left the music behind as some
Satanic thing from his past.In one of the honors of my
life and the biggest scoop in the short history of Rhythms of Redemption
I got a chance to throw a few questions across cyberspace to Richie Furay. When I left my little
hometown in Ohio to go to New York City to be a folk singer, I had no idea
where things would lead. What do you feel about that?I'm very proud of
those albums and was happy when they became available to the general market. Each one has
a special place in my heart and really gave me an opportunity to explore
the music within."You're not
gonna give me any of that Jesus music are you?"What do you look
back and listen to with most satisfaction? When you look
back do you ever find God lurking in the story before Al Perkins brought
him right into your home? You were not really
seeking God.When my dad died (I was 13), going to church slowly
slipped from the routine as far as I can remember.Jesus loved me, died
for sins, believe in him if you want to go to heaven.Church was more of
a social event for me.Up 'til that time I never knew I could have a personal relationship with
god or that I needed one if I had hopes for heaven.Al started sharing
with me.American Hindu "stuff" at that time and it just never took
hold.Hebrews 415), and revealing the one true God to man.He showed me a God who
loved me unconditionally (I was not very nice to Al when Chris insisted
he be a part of the SHF band).Al was patient and persistent and God used
him to soften my heart to the grace of his salvation.Richie Furay would have success in Poco before becoming
a minister; and Neil Young would go on to do a million things.Your line
is quite a line if you think about it.Let me ask you
about vocation.Music is still very
much a part of my life and holds a very passionate place in my heart. If I write a song of praise
and worship, I know who I loved me and gave himself for me.When I was growing up I wanted
to be a lot of things.OK as a musician, but you know, one thing I never put on
my list of "wannabe's" was servant.Certainly there's
no real way to compare the two.The value of what I did as a musician is
very important to me.Jesus and what he has done and is doing in my life.Certainly my
approach is a little different from when I first started doing this, but
it's because I'm more secure with who I am in the Lord and who he is to
me.Are there are
any ways your career in rock music prepared you for the ministry?Only in so much as
they both have given me opportunity to be involved with people's lives.Christ
are more open to hear and listen.Maybe it's because they see this relationship
is not a passing moment. There is
a spiritual warfare going on in the world today for the souls of lost men
and women. Most of my songs that are specifically directed to a Christian
audience are worship and praise songs now.I'll get it recorded
one of these days.If you are still
writing, is the writing a hobby, part of the ministry or a separate vocation? Are you still
in touch with the rock n roll fraternity that you were so much a part of?Not on a regular
basis, but somewhat, especially the guys in Poco with whom I "sit in" if
they're in or close to town.On the contrary,
they were sincere love songs that anyone could have interpreted in many
different ways.Roll success that was consuming me at the time.Neil mentions two old friends talking about God.Jesus Christ
to all who come through our doors ) Romans 11:6, For I am not ashamed of
the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone
who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.I'm
simply Richie or Pastor Richie.Just because I am a "pastor",
I'm simply a servant of the Lord fulfilling one of the offices in the body
of Christ.Lord, so when one visits, if they're coming for
any other reason than to see Jesus they might be disappointed.Of course Pastor
Chuck Smith who began the Calvary Chapel Movement.Greg Laurie, another
Calvary pastor. These men were great men of God who wrote some awesome commentaries.Do you think
the Church in general is influencing society enough?Jesus said Luke 18:8
Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the
earth?"Who do you listen
to musically?The Bible and commentaries.What
would you say to a budding musician out there who is following Jesus but
pursuing a career in rock music?Far too many
who are seeking some kind of a "career in the music business" are easily
swayed and forget their calling. He also tries
to spend some time with his wife Janice and daughters Caitlin and Jasmine.Richie Furay helped shape the sound of folk and country rock as we know it today.Richie Furay: I remember Christmas morning going downstairs. It was puke green with cowboy scenes on it and a gut string guitar.Furay: I turned in my Christmas present. There he met Steven Stills, Neal Young and Jim Messina.Furay: We thought the only competition we had were the Beatles. The only competition we had was the Beatles.Ross: But Buffalo Springfield broke up.Ross: Then you evolved out of that experience to Poco.Ross: That was your group? We had a conscious idea of what we wanted to do.Poco is never going to have a hit record. The Souther Hillman Furay band was his next step pursuing rock and roll stardom. But Richie had been working at becoming a star for six years now, and .Furay: I was consumed with wanting that rock and roll success.Steven and Neal go on to just giant success. But while Richie was consumed with his career, Nancy was looking for something to give her life meaning.Guitar player, Al Perkins, was being considered.Christian and that would have stopped us from attaining the success that I wanted to attain.Soon Al and his wife were having dinner with Richie a lot.Nancy has in her mind the marriage is over.Furay: No, dead silence, dead silence.Ross: Did you stop loving him?Nancy: I wanted out of the marriage.Richie was hopeful that Nancy would agree to give the marriage a chance. He had to be first in our lives.Ross: Now your marriage has lasted 39 years. When you look back on all of it, are you glad you stuck with him?In 1997, Richie was enshrined in the Rock and Roll Music Hall of Fame for his contribution to Buffalo Springfield. He has the statue to prove it.Are you seeking answers in life? Are you facing a difficult situation? The Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc.Background color has been set to '+this. Are you a fan site webmaster?Add a link to your "Richie Furay" fan site on VH1.Get FREE UPDATES for Richie Furay!Heartbeat of Love Label: Richie Furay Release: 01.Did you know you can post a link to your fan site?Add a link to your Richie Furay fan site on VH1.Keep tabs on Richie Furay!Create a configuration object and add the keywords to the conf.Rocks (Active Rock)
