Scorpions are eight legged venomous invertebrates belonging to the class Arachnida, and the order Scorpiones. They are related to spiders, mites, ticks, and harvestmen as well as other members of the Arachnida class. There are roughly 1,300 species of scorpions worldwide.Though most prolific and diverse in warm habitat, scorpions have adapted to a wide range of environments, including plains and savannahs, deciduous forests, mountainous pine forests, rain forests and caves.Scorpions have been found at elevations of over 12,000 feet in the Andes Mountains in South America and in the Himalayas of Asia, as well as the Alps.In snowy areas, they hibernate during the cold months of the year.About 90 species are found in the U.All but four of these naturally occur west of the Mississippi River.Scorpions are most common in southern Arizona and in parts of Texas and central Oklahoma. The scorpion's body has two parts, a cephalothorax which contains the prosoma, or head; and the abdomen. The carapace usually suports a pair of median eyes at the top center. The abdomen is made up of the mesosoma, the main body, and the metasoma, the tail. The mesosoma, protected by bony armour, contains the lungs, digestive organs and sexual organs, as well as bearing 4 pairs of walking legs and the pectines. The pectines are feathery sensory organs which hang beneath the abdomen and trail on the ground. They are coated by chemosensors that provide detection of minute chemical signals that are thought to alert the scorpions to the approach of prey and also to be of use in mating behavior. The surfaces of the legs, pedipalps, and body are also covered with thicker hairs that are sensitive to direct touch. Most species of scorpions reach adulthood at a length of between 2 and 3 inches.Hadrurus (giant desert hairy scorpions) are probably the largest, growing to a length of about 5 inches. They often ambush their prey, lying in wait as they sense its approach. They consume all types of insects, spiders, centipedes, and other scorpions.Larger scorpions may feed on vertebrates, such as smaller lizards, snakes, and mice if they are able to subdue them. They capture their prey with their pedipalps, paralyzing them with their venom as well if necessary. As well as being predators, scorpions are also prey. Many types of creatures, such as centipedes, tarantulas, insectivorous lizards, birds (especially owls), and mammals, including shrews, grasshopper mice, and bats hunt scorpions for food. The pedipalps are used in scorpion courtship behavior. The male performs a kind of dance with the female, grabbing her pedipalps with his own and dragging her across the ground until he locates a preferred place to deposit his spermatophore, which is then drawn up into the female's genital pore, near the front on the underside of her abdomen.Scorpion gestation periods vary from several months to a year and a half, depending on the species. The young scorpions are born two at at time, climbing onto their mother's back to be carried there until their first molt in about two weeks, when they will be large and strong enough to take care of themselves.Scorpions do not metamorphasize as they grow, changing only in size and sometimes to a deeper color with each molt. Some kinds of scorpions show more sophisticated social behaviors, like colonial burrowing, and living in familial groups that may share burrows and food.Scorpion venom is used to subdue prey and to defend against threats, as well as in the mating process.Scorpions are apparently able to regulate the delivery of the venom in scale to the size of their target. Some scorpions are known to produce a transparent prevenom in addition to the more potent opaque venom which is loaded with additional toxin. If the action persists, the opaque venom is released. These abilities enable the scorpion to conserve the venom for use when it is needed most, for larger predators or prey. Most of the more venomous scorpions have lighter, more delicate pedipalps and larger, stronger tails. The Buthidae family contains most of the scorpions dangerous to man.Only one species of scorpion in North America and about 20 others worldwide have venom potent enough to be dangerous to human beings.Death is rare, especially in more recent times.Scorpions have been found in many fossil records, including coal deposits from the Carboniferous Period and in marine Silurian deposits.Want to get rid of them?Scorpions are difficult to control with insecticides alone.Keep grass closely mowed near the home.Prune bushes and overhanging tree branches away from the house.Tree branches can provide a path to the roof for scorpions.Caulk around roof eaves, pipes and any other cracks into the home.Keep window screens in good repair.Make sure they fit tightly in the window frame. When using pyrethroids or other insecticides labeled for scorpion control, be sure to use the highest permissible label rate. When applying pesticides directly onto individual scorpions, apply judiciously.Apply pesticides around the foundation of the building and up to 1 foot above ground level on the exterior walls. Also apply pesticides around doors, window eaves and other potential points of entry.Follow directions on the package for dosage, mixing and application methods. In addition, it is advisable to wear protective clothing such as shoes or gloves when in scorpion prone areas whenever possible.Check shoes and equipment left outside in areas with indigenous scorpions prior to use.Smith, Carl Olson and Paul Baker, best known for their 1980s rock anthem "Rock You Like a Hurricane" and their singles "Wind of Change", "No One Like You", "Still Loving You", "Humanity", "Send Me an Angel".Although the band's official name is "Scorpions", they are often referred to as "The Scorpions".Things began to come together in 1969 when Schenker's younger brother Michael and vocalist Klaus Meine joined the band.In 1972, the group recorded and released their debut album Lonesome Crow, with Lothar Heimberg on bass and Wolfgang Dziony on drums.During the Lonesome Crow tour, Scorpions opened for upcoming British band UFO.At the end of the tour, the members of UFO offered guitarist Michael Schenker the lead guitar job; an offer which he soon accepted.Uli Roth, a friend of the Schenker brothers, was then called in temporarily to finish off the tour. The departure of Michael Schenker led to the break up of the Scorpions. In 1973, Uli Roth, who had helped the Scorpions complete the Lonesome Crow tour, was offered the role as lead guitarist, but turned the band down, preferring instead to remain in the band Dawn Road.Rudolf eventually decided that he wanted to work with Roth, but did not want to resurrect the last Scorpions lineup.Scorpions released Fly to the Rainbow. The album proved to be more successful than Lonesome Crow and songs such as "Speedy's Coming" and the title track began to establish the band's sound.Achim Kirschning decided to leave after the recordings.Rosenthal had to leave as he was being drafted into the army, joined German progressive rock band called Eloy in 1976 and recorded three albums with them.In 1975 the band hit their stride with the release of In Trance, which marked the beginning of Scorpions' long collaboration with German producer Dieter Dierks. The album was a huge step forward for Scorpions and firmly established their hard rock formula, while at the same time garnering a substantial fan base, both at home and abroad.Cuts such as "Dark Lady", "Robot Man" and the title track are still considered classics by fans today. In 1976, Scorpions released Virgin Killer.Taken by Force, RCA Records, the band's label, made a determined effort to promote the album in stores and on the radio.Roth was not happy with the commercial direction the band was taking.By that time in mid 1978, after auditioning around 140 guitarists, Scorpions recruited new guitarist Matthias Jabs.Following the addition of Jabs, Scorpions left RCA for Mercury Records to record their next album.Containing such fan favorites as "Loving You Sunday Morning", "Holiday" and the instrumental "Coast to Coast", the "Scorpions formula" of hard rock songs mixed in with melodic ballads was firmly cemented.US charts proving that Scorpions were gathering an international following. After the completion and release of the album, the band decided to retain Michael in the band, thus forcing Matthias Jabs to leave. In April 1979, during their tour in France, Matthias Jabs was brought in permanently to replace Michael Schenker. In 1980, the band released Animal Magnetism, again with a provocative cover showing a girl kneeling in front of a man.He required surgery on his vocal cords and there were doubts as to whether he would ever sing again. However, Scorpions did manage to stir up controversy once again with their provocative album cover. This time it was a boy kissing a girl and at the same time planting a tattoo on her naked thigh. Some shops refused to sell the album, mimicking a gag from the satire movie This Is Spinal Tap that came out the same year. The channel even supplied Scorpions with the nickname "The Ambassadors of Rock".Released in 1988, four years after their previous studio album, Savage Amusement represented a more polished pop sound similar to the style Def Leppard had found success with. The album sold well, but was considered somewhat of a critical disappointment. On the Savage Amusement tour in 1988, Scorpions became only the second Western group to play in the Soviet Union (the first being Uriah Heep in December 1987), with a performance in Leningrad. As a result, Scorpions developed a strong Russian fan base and still return regularly to perform throughout the area.Crazy World was released that same year and displayed a less polished sound. The album was a hit, propelled in large part by the massive success of the ballad "Wind of Change".Eastern Europe and in other parts of the world at the end of the Cold War.Scorpions performed both versions of "In the Flesh" from The Wall.In 1993 Scorpions released Face the Heat.Bass playing was handled by Ralph Rieckermann. For the recording process, Scorpions brought in producer Bruce Fairbairn."Alien Nation" nor the ballad "Under The Same Sun" came close to matching the success of "Wind of Change".In 1995, a new live album, Live Bites, was produced.World Wide Live, it was not as successful.Prior to recording their 13th studio album, 1996's Pure Instinct, drummer Herman Rarebell left the band to set up a recording label.Still, the album's singles "Wild Child" and the soothing ballad "You and I" both enjoyed moderate success. However, the orchestra had first approached Scorpions with the idea back in 1995.In 2001, Scorpions released Acoustica, a live unplugged album featuring acoustic reworkings of the band's biggest hits, plus new tracks.Scorpions toured extensively behind the album, and played as special guests with Judas Priest during the 2005 British tour.In early 2006, Scorpions released the DVD 1 Night in Vienna that included 14 live tracks and a complete rockumentary.Hour I became available in the U."We didn't want to make another record with songs about boys chasing girls.Right now we are at the beginning of the world tour.Hour II right now must be treated by a doctor. With an adult's help, put an ice pack on the sting immediately to keep down swelling. They may give a medicine called antivenin that fights the scorpion's venom to someone who doesn't get better with the other medications. How to Avoid Getting Bitten The best way to avoid getting stung by scorpions is to avoid the places where they like to spend time.If you live in the American Southwest and keep your shoes in a garage, basement, or mudroom, shake them out carefully before putting them on.For specific medical advice, diagnoses, and treatment, consult your armor around the body.Newly molted scorpions do not glow until after their cuticle has hardened. The abdomen consists of the mesosoma and the metasoma.Mesosoma The mesosoma, the abdomen's front half, is made up of six segments. The second segment bears a pair of featherlike sensory organs known as the pectines; the final four segments each contain a pair of book lungs. The mesosoma is armored with chitinous plates, known as tergites on the upper surface and sternites on the lower surface.Metasoma The metasoma, the scorpion's tail, comprising six segments (the first tail segment looks like a last mesosoman segment), the last containing the scorpion's anus and bearing the telson (the sting). On rare occasions, scorpions can be born with two metasomata (tails).Reproduction Most scorpions reproduce sexually and most species have male and female individuals.Parthenogenic reproduction starts following the scorpion's final moult to maturity and continues thereafter.Sexual reproduction is accomplished by the transfer of a spermatophore from the male to the female; scorpions possess a complex courtship and mating ritual to effect this transfer.Mating starts with the male and female locating and identifying each other using a mixture of pheromones and vibrational communication; once they have satisfied each other that they are of opposite sex and of the correct species, mating can commence. This allows the spermatophore to enter her genital opercula, which triggers release of the sperm, thus fertilizing the female. The mating process can take from 1 to 25+ hours and depends on the ability of the male to find a suitable place to deposit his spermatophore. If mating goes on for too long, the female may eventually break off the process. The male will generally retreat quickly, most likely to avoid being cannibalized by the female, although sexual cannibalism is infrequent with scorpions.Unlike the majority of Arachnida species, scorpions are viviparous. The young are born one by one, and the brood is carried about on its mother's back until the young have undergone at least one moult. Before the first moult, scorplings cannot survive naturally without the mother, depending on her for protection and to regulate their moisture levels.Growth is accomplished by periodic shedding of the exoskeleton (ecdysis).Scorpions typically require between five and seven moults to reach maturity.Moulting is effected by means of a split in the old exoskeleton which takes place just below the edge of the carapace (at the front of the prosoma). The scorpion must constantly stretch while the new exoskeleton hardens to ensure that it can move when the hardening is complete. The process of hardening is called sclerotization.Life and habits Scorpions have quite variable lifespans and the actual lifespan of most species is not known. They are nocturnal and fossorial, finding shelter during the day in the relative cool of underground holes or undersides of rocks and coming out at night to hunt and feed.Scorpions exhibit photophobic behavior, primarily to evade destruction by their predators such as birds, centipedes, lizards, mice, possums, and rats.Scorpions are opportunistic predators of small arthropods and insects. They use their chela (pincers) to catch the prey initially.Depending on the toxicity of their venom and size of their claws, they will then either crush the prey or inject it with neurotoxic venom. The chelicerae, which are very sharp, are used to pull small amounts of food off the prey item for digestion.Scorpions can only digest food in a liquid form; any solid matter (fur, exoskeleton, etc) is disposed of by the scorpion. In general, scorpion venom is described as neurotoxic in nature. The neurotoxins consist of a variety of small proteins as well as sodium and potassium cations, which serve to interfere with neurotransmission in the victim.Scorpions use their venom to kill or paralyze their prey so that it can be eaten; in general it is fast acting, allowing for effective prey capture. The effects of the sting can be severe.Scorpion venoms are optimized for action upon other arthropods and therefore most scorpions are relatively harmless to humans; stings produce only local effects (such as pain, numbness or swelling).Buthidae, can be dangerous to humans. The higher death count is simply due to its being found more commonly, especially near humans.Human deaths normally occur in the young, elderly, or infirm; scorpions are generally unable to deliver enough venom to kill healthy adults.Depending on the severity of the allergy, the scorpion's sting may cause anaphylaxis and death.Scorpions are generally harmless and timid, and only voluntarily use their sting for killing prey, defending themselves or in territorial disputes with other scorpions.Scorpions are able to regulate how much venom is injected with each sting using striated muscles in the stinger, the usual amount being between 0.There is also evidence to suggest that scorpions restrict the use of their venom using it only to subdue large prey, or prey that struggles. It has been found that scorpions have two types of venom: a translucent, weaker venom designed to stun only, and an opaque, more potent venom designed to kill heavier threats. There is currently no equivalent of the Schmidt Sting Pain Index because nobody has yet classified the levels of pain inflicted by different scorpion stings. This is probably because of the risk involved with some species, such as Androctonus australis or Leiurus quinquestriatus. The stings of North American scorpions are rarely serious and usually result in pain, minimal swelling, tenderness, and warmth at the sting site. However, the Arizona bark scorpion (Centruroides exilicauda or sculpturatus), which is found in Arizona and New Mexico and on the California side of the Colorado River, has a much more toxic sting. The sting is painful, sometimes causing numbness or tingling in the area around the sting. The stings of most North American scorpions require no special treatment.Placing an ice cube on the wound reduces pain, as does an ointment containing a combination of an antihistamine, an analgesic, and a corticosteroid.Centruroides antivenom rapidly relieves symptoms, but it may cause a serious allergic reaction or serum sickness. In Trinidad the leaf juice of Eclipta prostrata is used for scorpion stings. Some compounds from plants used for general inflammation also inhibit enzymes (like phospholipase A2) from snake and scorpion venom.Fossil record Scorpions have been found in many fossil records, including coal deposits from the Carboniferous Period and in marine Silurian deposits. The eurypterids, marine creatures which lived during the Paleozoic era, share several physical traits with scorpions and are closely related to them.Various species of Eurypterida could grow to be anywhere from 10 cm (4 in) to 3 m (9.Despite this, some refer to them as "sea scorpions."N, and their geographical distribution shows in many particulars a close and interesting correspondence with that of the mammals, including their entire absence from New Zealand.Malayan area to the north of it.In the United States, scorpions are most common in southern Arizona and in a swath of land extending through central Texas and central Oklahoma.Species of the genus Vaejovis are found from Florida north to Maryland, the Carolinas, and Tennessee, and as far west as Oregon and California.Paruroctonus boreus is found through the Northwest U.Scorpions can be found in 31 different states in the U.Five colonies of scorpions (Euscorpius flavicaudis) have established themselves in southern England having probably arrived with imported fruit from Africa, but the number of colonies could be lower now because of the destruction of their habitats.Suicide misconception The belief that scorpions commit suicide by stinging themselves to death when surrounded by fire is of considerable antiquity and is often prevalent where these animals exist. It is also untrue that alcohol will cause scorpions to sting themselves to death.Scorpions are also known to glow when exposed to certain wavelengths of ultraviolet light such as that which is produced by a blacklight.Additional taxonomic changes are from Soleglad et
