website.Screeching Weasel started in 1986, a few weeks after Ben Weasel saw the Ramones play.Alas Well, according to Ben, "Jughead and I got together and put together the songs I'd been working on for a year.We played to crowds of three and five people inside dingy bars owned by men of questionable reputation."Who knows where all these other bands went wrong, but that doesn't matter because we still have Screeching Weasel. And subsequent generations of punks will have them too if Fat Wreck Chords has any say in the matter. Thus is the rationale behind their latest Fat release entitled Weasel Mania (A tip of the cap no doubt to the band that first inspired Ben all those years ago).Screeching Weasel is the underground's equivalent to a household name and one of the very few bands deserving of the title "essential".Because of the huge impression they made on the scene many consider them synonymous with pivotal bands such as Jawbreaker, Fugazi, Operation Ivy, and Green Day.After 15 years, the band split for a final time in 2001.The band reunited briefly in 2004 to play a short set at a Chicago club but have no plans to reunite again.Screeching Weasel was an American punk band from Chicago, Illinois. They were formed in 1986 by Ben Weasel and John Jughead. The band gained prominence in the early 1990s after signing a record deal with the East Bay punk label, Lookout!Members

4.In 1986 teenage friends from the Chicago area Ben Foster and John Pierson were inspired to start a band after attending a Ramones concert.Shortly after their formation, Ben decided it was too difficult to play bass and sing at the same time, so Vince Vogel, who took the stage name "Vinnie Bovine" joined as the group's bassist.Chicago label Underdog Records in 1987.Roadkill Records, a label run in part by Ben and Jughead."Sewercap" and later renamed Danny Vapid. The new band members recorded an EP titled Punkhouse for Limited Potential Records soon after that.Screeching Weasel broke up when Vermin and Vapid stated that they wanted to quit the band to concentrate on their side project, Sludgeworth.Weasel and Jughead formed a new band called The Gore Gore Girls, and Ben briefly performed in the original incarnation of The Vindictives.Ben, Jughead, Vapid, Vermin, and Ward. After the show, Dan Vapid discussed the idea of reforming Screeching Weasel with Jughead. All of the band's members agreed to reform, with the exceptions of Brian Vermin and Douglas Ward (who, presumably, was not invited). Before recording their next album, 1991's My Brain Hurts (for Lookout!Vapid switched instruments from bass to guitar, and former Gore Gore Girls bassist Dave Naked joined the band. After the tour, Johnny Personality of The Vindictives became the group's bassist, as Gub was committed to another band.By late 1992, the band had recorded the follow up to My Brain Hurts, Wiggle.Johnny Personality then quit the band to focus on The Vindictives. The band was then asked to record a cover of an entire Ramones album, 1992's Ramones, followed later that year by Anthem For A New Tomorrow.Shortly after the record's release, Ben decided that he no longer wanted to play live, and Vapid quit after falling out with the rest of the group.Screeching Weasel enlisted the help of Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt to record what they intended to be their final album. After 1994's How To Make Enemies And Irritate People was released, the band broke up for the second time.Following the second breakup, Weasel, Vapid, and Panic formed the band The Riverdales and experienced some notoriety touring with Green Day.By 1996 they rejoined with Jughead and recorded a new Screeching Weasel album Bark Like A Dog for Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords label.Weasel also decided for the second time that he no longer wanted to play guitar, so guitarist Zac Damon was added.Major Label Debut EP; the first release on Panic Button Records, a label Ben and John had formed that year and quickly followed it with Television City Dream.Zac Damon, who was unable to record due to school commitments at the time.In 2000 the band brought in Phillip Hill as a second guitarist and recorded what would be their final album, Teen Punks In Heat. After the album, Screeching Weasel made their first live appearances since 1993, playing 30 minute matinees at Chicago's House of Blues.Members of Screeching Weasel have since gone on to form bands such as The Methadones, Even in Blackouts, and briefly reunited The Riverdales. These Ones Are Bitter, in 2007.In 2004, Ben rescinded all of the Screeching Weasel and Riverdales masters from Lookout! Both Ben and Jughead authored books seemingly related to Screeching Weasel.Jughead released Weasels in a Box, his admittedly fictionalized account of Screeching Weasel's history. Both books were published by Hope And Nonthings, a publishing house run by Jughead. In 2007 a live performance of the band was included in 924 Gilman, a documentary about the famous club.At 2007's 'Insubordination Fest' in Baltimore, Ben Weasel performed a set, backed by The Guts, and was joined on stage by Dan Vapid on guitar for several Screeching Weasel and Riverdales songs. Please include more appropriate citations from reliable sources. Also much like the Ramones, common lyrical themes were girls, paranoia, and anxiety problems (which Weasel suffered from).During this time Ben Weasel frequently collaborated with Joe King, frontman of The Queers, to write songs. How To Make Enemies And Irritate People

which included future favorites like, "I Hate Led Zepplin," was played with Ben Weasel, the singer, sitting on the edge of the stage most of the time looking bored. In between songs, Ben seemed to be arguing with himself about who were the bigger idiots that night: the small group of people standing there blinking dumbly, or the band itself for bothering to play at all.SCREECHING WEASEL broke single Tambourine and a killer verse from Party Like a Rockstar.Get behind the scenes footage from other Sessions alums.Turmoil comes with the territory: it's what I heard a girl once say.But Screeching Weasel was something more than just another independent punk band that marched alone, refusing to give in to trends and thereby setting their own.In the present state of rock music, so desperately lacking originality, Screeching Weasel carried the torch of rock music, perhaps unknowingly picking up were The Ramones left off. This isn't to say that Screeching Weasel's music sounds like the boys from Queens, it does and it doesn't, and if you can't tell the difference than you have no business listening to either one.Screeching Weasel also kept their aesthetic structurally simple so they could relay their emotions, frustrations, and passions honestly, without highbrow musicianship clogging the path to their audience. The bottom line was always fierce integrity. And now sadly, both bands are gone. While the Ramones are still undervalued and have yet to receive the full recognition of their expansive influence, but are nevertheless still recognized, Screeching Weasel, I'm afraid, will be whittled down to a slivered footnote in rock history. Why write about a dead band, praising them after the fact?Maybe in a sense I see their demise as a time to reflect not just on the bands output but on my own musical preferences and my own feelings about the state of rock n' roll. So, whenever I find myself becoming restless and frustrated with such shameless grandstanding of popular rock music I turn to the boys from Chicago, Illinois, Screeching Weasel: the band that to me exemplifies the vibration and thunder of rock 'n'roll. And as the years have past, time and again cranking through their numerous albums, it wasn't a stretch to recognize that their music extends far beyond simple teen punk antics. But these guys are and will always be light years ahead of the likes of Blink 182 or Sum 41, two bands that are nothing more than a cuter version of Green Day minus the lyrical chops or farting grace to charm the pants off a prostitute if they had a freebie. If I could borrow a tired, overwrought film term, Screeching Weasel were auteurs of rock 'n' roll. But as with any true auteur, you can't understand an album like Emo if you haven't listened to their other stuff. The meaning reveals itself only by placing it within their entire body of work.Nor are they lyrically literate. But you see, that is exactly what true rock 'n' roll should be.Weasel's lyrics are art because they are honest and undressed. But let's just say that early Weasel classics like "Murder at the Brady House" and "I Wanna Be Naked" are as rude and crude as The Troggs were horny, with both bands sowing their adolescent oats.Where does this leave us?Why should you see Screeching Weasel as musically significant? How did I come to see this light; the callousness and sensitivity, the melodic and revved up avalanche of sound of Screeching Weasel? They didn't care if nobody wanted Dokken's second album. They'd carry it until somebody did.No matter, at the time I knew very little about myself and even less about music. For god's sake a year earlier I was listening to bad metal bands. But what really symbolized my rite of musical passage, what started to give my life its own soundtrack was my embracing punk. The Clash: London Calling, Combat Rock, and Give 'Em Enough Rope.Maybe it was something like Green Day recording "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)", sounding unpunk to make a punk point. And, Green Day brings me back to the record store and Screeching Weasel and how I got to this point to begin with.Kerplunk and 1039, and this was before Dookie and I'm sure you know what followed.Punk wasn't a commodity but well, I guess it always has been.Rotten and Vicious just made sure nobody but Virgin (and themselves) would profit.Operation Ivy, who along with Screeching Weasel, are perhaps one of the most scathingly powerful bands of my generation to make music that mattered without getting the recognition.Going into the record store that day I was craving new sounds, a new band, a band like Op Ivy and Green Day but different. To me, they seemed like a company you could trust, a sure fire winner in every jewel case. There it was, Screeching Weasel's My Brain Hurts.London Calling has the best cover art, My Brain Hurts has perhaps the worst with its black and white shot of a couple washing the dinner dishes circa 1945: the woman, a dead ringer for Myrna Loy, is smiling up at hubby. So, I rhetorically ask the headbanger behind the counter, "Is this any good?"The sound that emanated from the speakers that day in the smoked filled room humbled me.After those experiences, concepts you've held about life and about yourself seem different, in need of change. You just know you're better off for it.The sound and speed at which the guitars and drums smashed through the stereo in the opening moments of "Making You Cry" threw me back.Like a frustrated boyfriend writhing in anguish for the kinda love he can't give. And as the songs relentlessly crashed on me at breakneck speed I finally found a connection, an outlet for my anger at society that wasn't like the way I wanted it to be.The Troggs sound but with the soul baring emotion of Blood on the Tracks.Yet, Screeching Weasel is wholly original, the bastard sons of no one."What We Hate" is the acknowledgment that anger and resentment always has a way of coming back to bite you in the ass.The song within the context of album's focus and mood, makes your mind work in a way that is far less obvious than Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth."You can sit around bitching and complaining about all the things you don't like, waste time, or take it and run with it, end the apathy and powerlessness.Screeching Weasel's full charm and irreverence, and perhaps I will save that for later, but not now because this isn't about breaking down the strengths of a great band to prove their worth. And that is what Screeching Weasel does for me, in the purest and most direct way possible."Are
