Siegfried is the third of the four operas that comprise Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), by Richard Wagner.Mime, Alberich's brother, is forging a blade in his cave within the forest. The Nibelung dwarf is plotting to obtain the Ring for himself, having raised Siegfried to kill Fafner for him.He needs a sword for Siegfried to use, but the youth has broken every blade he has made.Siegfried returns from his wanderings in the forest, demanding to know his parentage, and Mime is forced to explain how he took in Siegfried's mother, Sieglinde, who died giving birth. He shows Siegfried the shards of Nothung, and Siegfried orders him to reforge the sword.Siegfried departs, leaving Mime in despair: it is beyond his skill to repair Nothung. An old man (Wotan in disguise) abruptly appears at his door. These are the Nibelung, the Giants, and the Gods, as the Wanderer correctly answers. However, he is unable to answer the last riddle.Siegfried returns and is annoyed by Mime's lack of progress.Mime realizes that the one thing he has not taught Siegfried is fear.Siegfried is eager to learn it, and Mime promises to teach him by bringing him to Fafner the dragon.Since Mime was unable to forge Nothung, Siegfried decides to do it himself. In the meantime, Mime, realizing that by the terms of his agreement with the Wanderer his head is now forfeit to Siegfried, brews a poisoned drink to offer Siegfried after the youth has defeated the dragon. The old enemies quickly recognize each other.Alberich blusters, boasting of his plans for ruling the World once the Ring is returned to him.Wotan calmly states that he does not intend to obtain the Ring.To Alberich's surprise, Wotan wakes Fafner and informs the dragon that a hero is coming to fight him.Fafner dismisses the threat, refuses to surrender the Ring to Alberich, and returns to sleep. At daybreak, Siegfried and Mime arrive.Mime decides to draw back while Siegfried confronts the dragon. As Siegfried waits for the dragon to appear, he notices a woodbird in a tree.Befriending it, he attempts to mimic the bird's song using a reed pipe, but is unsuccessful. He then plays a tune on his horn, which brings Fafner out of his cave. After a short exchange, they fight, and Siegfried stabs Fafner in the heart with Nothung. In his last moments, Fafner learns Siegfried's name, and tells him to beware of treachery. When Siegfried draws his sword from the corpse, his hands are burned by the dragon's blood, and he instinctively puts them to his mouth. On tasting the blood, he finds that he can understand the woodbird's song.Following its instructions, he takes the Ring and the Tarnhelm from Fafner's hoard.Mime reappears, and Siegfried complains that he has still not learned the meaning of fear. However, the dragon's blood allows Siegfried to read Mime's treacherous thoughts, and he slays the Nibelung.Fafner's body in the cave entrance to block it as well.Siegfried, wondering if he can learn fear from this woman, heads toward the mountain.Erda, appearing confused, is unable to offer any advice.Siegfried arrives, and the Wanderer questions the youth. The Wanderer blocks his path, but Siegfried breaks Wotan's spear with a blow from Nothung.Wotan calmly gathers up the pieces and vanishes. At first, he thinks the armored figure is a man.Uncertain about what to do, Siegfried at last experiences fear.Siegfried's love, and renounces the world of the Gods. The most common heard excerpt from Siegfried is the Forest Murmurs.Other famous excerpts include Prelude to Act I Siegfried's Forging Song (Nothung!Sources Siegfried begins fearless, and expresses his wish to learn fear to his foster father Mime, who says the wise learn fear quickly, but the stupid find it more difficult.Siegfried are for all intents nad purposes, the first major recording of the work. Its pluses and minuses were known from the start.Nilsson was incomparable in her gleaming, tireless singing.Windgassen compensated for his leathery aging voice with dramatic conviction.Solti's insistence on avalanches of sound made for thrills, aided by blockbuster sonics from Decca and the divine Vienna Phil. All in all, a young Wagnerite couldn't help but be fairly overwhelmed. It never occurred to me, though, that this would be the Siegfried of the century, because for all its merits, the hero wasn't youthful or blessed with a beautiful heroic voice, the Wotan was past his prime, and Solti had barely plumbed the emotional depths of Wagner's score.Bohm essentially had the same cast but a much inferior orchestra, choppy sound, and the drawback of a live performance (no retakes when the singers ran out of steam). No future cast even came close, and although Karajan had a strong Wanderer in Thomas Stewart and very good singers for Brunnhilde and Mime, the Siegfried of Jess Thomas was embarassingly underpowered.Solti, I must express gratitude for his Ring, especially the Gotterdammerung and this Siegfried. Was this exciting conductor, and a production team that was in the midst of a huge momentum of pushing the envelope in audio recordings. The recording problems are now legendary, with Ernst Kozub being the original Siegfried (Windgassen was thought to be too far past his prime to be ideal), but with Kozub not being prepared, Windgassen literally stepped in at the last minute to give a commanding performance.Windgassen was certainly no Melchior, but he was intelligent and hardworking, got along well with everyone, and the only tenor of his generation to sing all the major Wagner roles year after year. The voice is not heroic, or youthful, but Windgassen brought sensitivity and experience to the studio and created a believable three dimensional character which remains one of the best to date. For my poor ears, Hotter stands head and shoulders above all others, his sonorous voice conveying an ethereal presence, ancient and world weary, full of vast knowledge and experience.Erda, Neidlinger as Alberich and Dame Joan Sutherland complete a glorious cast of a long lost Golden Age of Wagner. On the podium is the controversial Solti in what is one of his finest moments on record.Siegfried is my favorite Wagner opera, and this glorious recording is the reason.Wolfgang Windgassen is past his prime as Siegfried and isn't quite heroic enough for Siegfried, but that matters far less on record than it would in the theater, and he gives an inspired interpretation of the part.He was THE Siegfried of the 50's and early 60's.He is even better, though, on the Karajan DG set, where his Mime is not so caricatured and is more direct.Hotter is in gorgeous voice and sings Wotan with a majesty and dignity that has disappeared in recent times.Neidlinger, as always, is a magnificent Alberich.Sutherland's Woodbird (luxury casting at the extreme!Helga Dernesch's singing for Karajan.Overall, though, this Solti is an excellent recording and well worth getting (though Decca should find a way of reducing the price).Richard Wagner (Composer), Georg Solti (Conductor), Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestra), Birgit Nilsson (Performer), Gerhard Stolze..."Was ich
