Info: Biography, Pictures, Discography of all CDs & DVDs
Skillet originally had three members: John Cooper (vocals, bass), Trey McClurkin (drums), and Ken Steorts (guitar). These original members also recorded their second CD, Hey You, I Love Your Soul, together.Soon after the release of Invincible, Trey McClurkin also left, and Lori Peters became Skillet's new drummer. The current lineup is John Cooper on lead vocals and bass guitar; Korey Cooper on background vocals, keyboards, and backup guitar; Ben Kasica on lead guitar; and Lori Peters as drummer.Skillet started as a Christian band in 1996 through the encouragement of John and Ken's pastor. When their bands broke up their pastor suggested that they start a new one.Ken was an older rocker, and John was into newer music, so their pastor suggested that they name the new band Skillet, since they were going to "throw it all in and see what you come up with".They did and Skillet was born.Skillet had only been together a month before they got interest from Forefront, a major Christian label. The album did well and Skillet continued to tour and write new material.Skillet morphed into a lighter rock that was more dependent on John's keyboarding. This was a problem when they performed live, since all of the members already had an instrument to play.Skillet continued to hone their sound and expand their fanbase for the next couple of years before they released Invincible in 2000.Because of this, Invincible completely changed from Skillet's trademark electric rock to full blown industrial rock remniscent of Marylin Manson or Nine Inch Nails. With barely enough time to breathe between touring and recording, Skillet released Alien Youth in 2001, which, to add to the already crazy schedule, was the first release that was produced by John. The first single Alien Youth made a big splash in the Christian market and drove Skillet into their first headlining shows. The music was compelling enough to attract Lee Trink, the general manager of Lava Records, to looking into giving Skillet a deal.In 2005 they were head liners for the edge fest in Albuquerque New Mexico. At the 2006 Ichthus Festival in Kentucky, it was announced onstage that their new record would be titled Comatose. As Cooper said on their official website "As soon as my feet hit the stage, I know no matter how many people are there I'm going to give it everything I've got.I'm going to do the best show I can do; the wildest show.Cooper spoke at Rock the Universe 2007 about how their guitarist Ben Kasica had been very sick and almost missed the show, and he went into detail on the subject of Kasica and Rock the Universe in an interview.Jesus Freak Hideout reported on this, saying, "A serious illness set back a member of Skillet recently."The biggest bummer was that we would have to miss "Rock the Universe" at Universal Studios, which is one of my all time favorite shows we have ever played. So, we sat up all night and taught our guitar tech Sean some guitar parts so we could do the shows. We slept for a total of ZERO hours and then drove to the airport to fly to Miami!Nothing can stop Skillet from the rock show baby! Then something happened that I hope never happens again: I had to play guitar for 4 songs because we did not have time to teach them to Sean. But, it wasn't too bad because the show was rockin'!!Then, amazingly enough, the doctor postponed Ben's surgery a day because Ben was too weak to have it.Tours In the tour of 2006, Korey Cooper took a break from performing, due to her pregnancy with their second child. They will team up with Luce in his Global Expeditions program on a missions trip with teenage missionaries this summer on a trip to Mexico.Decyfer Down joined Skillet for a March 31 through May 20 tour.Skillet will join Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, and Seether on the first half of their tour in fall 2007.Panheads Panheads are fans of the rock band Skillet. You see, there are three levels in "Skillethood".Those who don't know, those who become "Skilletfanz" through hearing our music, and then "Panheads", those who come to three or four shows traveling up to 10 hours, bringing skillets, banners, writing on their cars, and so forth.Of course, we love them all, but we have a special place in our hearts for "Panheads".Hey You, I Love Your Soul 1998 Locked In A Cage (Christian Formats) ChristianRock.Invincible 2000 Best Kept Secret (Christian plenty of experimenting and changes, which beings out more originality and uniqueness, which most bands will never have.Skillet takes a step forward and delivers a truly exciting, rocking and energetic album worth going out and picking up."The album is solid and lives up to the expectations the band have previously set."Skillet plays fabulous rock tunes and Cooper is a phenomenal writer but what the songs Those Nights, Rebirthing, (the first single released) and Looking For Angels, do is allow you for a brief moment to step into his life. They are life experiences and they are his life experiences. This is going to be known as one of Skillet's most popular and mature albums ever.In agreement with the medias assessment of COMATOSE, Ardent Records President John Fry commented, Cooper. The Last Night takes a more delicate twist, merging Johns vocals with his wife Korey Coopers keyboard cadences. There really arent a lot of labels that have that kind of pedigree for rock acts, and Skillet is yet another in a long line of great bands.Cooper and company can certainly relate, citing several from the labels lineage as influencers since its infancy. Its funny because every once in a while there was a touch of that on Collide, but until recently, I didnt see what that background had to do with rock music.Aside from Skillets musical strides, Coopers songwriting has expanded to cover a vast range of topical territories, some of which follow spiritual and socially conscious ideals, while others vulnerably mirror his personal life and struggles.Take, for instance, the aforementioned The Last Night, which talks about someone considering suicide after living life in despair and not having support from their parents. But a lot has mended since then and weve been able to move on.Skillet has managed to hit all of those three exactly on target, raising its game to yet another level of excellence. But more than composing a disc with killer compositions, Cooper hopes the albums deeper meaning of awakening will strike a chord on all levels with listeners. If we do that, maybe on a grand scheme we can help someone out in a city somewhere that weve never even met.In that."Cops" when we were passing through South Carolina. Then I would proceed in my mind with flexing my arms Hulk Hogan style.Note to self: bad jokes are even less funny when you are being questioned left."Comatose" opens up with their first single: "Rebirthing," a beautiful mix of power and emotion, which sets the pace for the rest of the album. The orchestral elements prove the musical genius that Skillet was capable of.Skillet has, once again, raised the bar for themselves and their contemporaries.Skillet's sound in "Comatose" is much more complete and mature. Now, it's about much more than the crunchy music.I've been a Skillet fan for years, and they just keep impressing me more with each album."Comatose" is a great blend of driving, hard rock with quick (though constant) infusions of synth rhythms.Songs like "The Last Night" and "Yours to Hold" contain some beautiful lyrics of love, but they're couched in the midst of the screaming guitars and driving rhythms."Rebirthing" and "Whispers in the Dark" show off the band's hard rock edge, while "Say Goodbye" and "Looking for Angels" are excellent ballads.Overall, another winner from this incredible band.Where's the POWER, Skillet?!!When I heard "REBIRTHING" on the radio, I thought, "AWESOME, Skillet is back in force!"So, I waited with eagerness the release of the full album, refamiliarizing myself with the great ALIEN YOUTH and COLLIDE in the mean time. How disappointing, then, when I heard the rest of the disc!Sadly, the rock edge is just missing this time.Skillet started with grunge, then segued into industrial a bit before landing firmly in hard rock with ALIEN YOUTH and COLLIDE, their best works to date.I've always liked them before. But when its track after track, it just gets disappointing!REBIRTHING, which is one of their best tracks of all time. But the rest of the album is sorely lacking! Was this review helpful to you?See all 88 customer reviews...Why do almost all the songs sound the same? But let's calling all to come alive in Christ."Whispers" unveils nods to the current prog crop via the channels of Yes, while "Better Than Drugs" (focusing on an eternal destiny rather than earthly gain) is a delightfully schizophrenic barnburner that is one of the disc's most aggressive displays."The Last Night" takes a more delicate twist, merging John's vocals with his wife Korey Cooper's keyboard cadences."It's the first record where we've really been one on one with the band, and it's the latest step in our unique journey together.I've been at the label seventeen years and we're known for having so many great rock n' roll bands: Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Yes, Bad Company. There really aren't a lot of labels that have that kind of pedigree for rock acts, and Skillet is yet another in a long line of great bands."Cooper and company can certainly relate, citing several from the label's lineage as influencers since its infancy. It's funny because every once in a while there was a touch of that on Collide, but until recently, I didn't see what that background had to do with rock music.Aside from Skillet's musical strides, Cooper's songwriting has expanded to cover a vast range of topical territories, some of which follow spiritual and socially conscious ideals, while others vulnerably mirror his personal life and struggles.Take, for instance, the aforementioned "The Last Night," which talks about someone considering suicide after living life in despair and not having support from their parents.Rather than calling it quits, a supportive friend reminds of God's unconditional love and they're eventually talked down from that ledge.Even closer to home for Cooper is "The Older I Get," which picks up after his mom passed away, tracing the rocky relationship he had with his dad and the eventual forgiveness they reached."It was a really bizarre situation and they didn't get along, which was also the point when my dad and I started fighting. From the time I was fourteen or fifteen, I don't remember having a single conversation with him for about four years that didn't have to do with fighting. But a lot has mended since then and we've been able to move on."The funny thing about Jesus is that He wasn't just all talk, but as much or more about relationships and communicating to people in a relatable way, as He was solely preaching to them," he observes."The way we tend to evangelize in today's Christian society is actually often times much different than the way Jesus reached out.As I was writing for this record, I realized bands like Linkin Park and Staind and Korn were being more relevant to people than I was.We prayed about these sessions, and we knew this is the direction God was leading us.It allows us to reach out to people who've maybe been turned off by what they think is 'Christian music,' which may get them out to a concert to hear even more of our message.I'm very passionate about evangelism, but love begets evangelism and we want people to know we care about their needs in a practical way."Skillet has managed to hit all of those three exactly on target, raising its game to yet another level of excellence."If we do that, maybe on a grand scheme we can help someone out in a city somewhere that we've never even met.In traveling around so much, especially in the last couple of years, we're
