For the English rock band, see Status Quo.This does not cite any references or sources.September 2006) Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Please discuss this issue on the talk page.Status quo is a Latin term meaning the present, current, existing state of affairs. To maintain the status quo is to keep the things the way they currently are.The related phrase status quo ante, means "the state of things as it was before."Latin, the original sentence was in statu quo res erant ante bellum "in the state in which things were before the war".This gave rise to the shorter form status quo ante bellum "the state in which (it was) before the war", indicating the withdrawal of enemy troops and restoration of power to prewar leadership, as well as other variations, such as status quo itself.Arguing to preserve the status quo is usually done in the context of opposing a large, often radical change. The term frequently refers to the status of a large issue, such as the current culture or social climate of an entire society or nation.Status quo can also refer to the social status in the workplace or peer group school.Politicians sometimes refer to a status quo.Often there is a policy of deliberate ambiguity, referring to the status quo rather than formalizing the status.Clark Kerr is reported to have said, "The status quo is the only solution that cannot be vetoed," meaning that the status quo cannot simply be decided against; action must be taken if it is to change.Sometimes specific institutions are founded to actively maintain the status quo.The United Nations, for example, was intended to help solidify the peaceful international status quo that immediately followed World War II.This assures that the following episode may begin from the same starting point, eliminating the need for the viewer to have knowledge of prior plot elements or to experience particular episodes in the correct order.TV shows since their inception, with all drastic changes usually happening in the premiere or finale of a given season, allowing the creative team to set up a "new" status quo.In recent years, however, this rule has softened, as even many sitcoms have started to develop stories and deepen character relationships over the course of a season. In Israel, the term refers to an informal agreement conducted in 1947 between the secular leadership of the Zionist movement in Palestine and leaders of the religious Jews, which created a framework for the establishment of the country. It has been more or less maintained throughout the country's existence.Peter is reported to have said, "Bureaucracy defends the status quo long past the time when the quo has lost its status."Look up Status quo in Wiktionary, the free Quo or just Quo, are an English rock band whose music is characterised by a strong boogie line. The group was founded by bassist Alan Lancaster and guitarist Francis Rossi in 1962, becoming "The Status Quo" in late 1967, and finally settling on the name "Status Quo" in 1970.Status Quo in the 2000s 6 Band Members 6.Early career Status Quo began as a rock and roll freakbeat band in 1962.At Sedgehill Comprehensive School, Catford, Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster, who were members of the same orchestra, started a band called The Scorpions.Changing their name to The Spectres, Rossi and Lancaster played their first gig at the Samuel Jones Sports Club in Dulwich, South London. All three sank without trace.History of the band By 1967 the group discovered psychedelia and changed their name to Traffic (later Traffic Jam, to avoid confusion with Steve Winwood's Traffic). They released another single 'Almost But Not Quite There' which was also a flop.In late 1967 the band became The Status Quo, and in January 1968 they released the very successful Top 10 single "Pictures of Matchstick Men".Rick Parfitt was invited to join the band just as this hit the charts. The single reached Number 7 in the charts.Unfortunately, the band followed it up with another flop, "Black Veils Of Melancholy"."Pictures of Matchstick Men" remains the only Top 40 hit single the group has ever charted in the United States.Lynes left in 1971, to be replaced (in the studio) by guests including keyboard studio player, Jimmy Horowitz and John Parker.Quo have sold in excess of 118 million records worldwide.Live Aid charity event at Wembley in July 1985.That year Rossi recorded and released two solo singles with longtime writing partner Bernie Frost. In the summer of 1985 Rossi, Parfitt and Bown, along with Edwards and Rich started work on a new Status Quo album.Lancaster, who was by now permanently living in Australia, took out a legal injunction to stop the band using the Status Quo name on any records, citing his increasing musical differences with the group, notably during the sessions for the 1983 album Back to Back over two tracks which became hit singles for the group around that time. The injunction was lifted after a court hearing in January 1986.Lancaster remained in Australia, and in 1986 joined a band called 'Party Boys', who had no success in Britain. He left the band in 1987.April 1994 with Manchester United Football Club as "Come on You Reds" giving the band their second UK Number 1.Parfitt had to undergo heart surgery in 1997 but was able to overcome it and make a successful return with a memorable performance in Norwich three months later.Andrew Bown also took a year off at the same time for family reasons, and was temporarily replaced on stage by Paul Hirsh, formerly of Voyager.Status Quo in the 2000s Although Status Quo still release new material every few years, recent years have seen them release a series of greatest hits compilations and covers albums. One of the band's most recent original albums, Heavy Traffic, is considered by many fans to show a return to their classic 1970s form.BBC television quiz programme Mastermind chose Status Quo as his specialist subject. In December 2005 it was announced that Parfitt was undergoing tests for throat cancer.Their latest album, 'In Search of the Fourth Chord', was released on the band's own Fourth Chord label in September 2007.Produced by veteran producer Pip Williams, who had worked with Quo in the studio since 1977, the album was critically acclaimed as a continued return to form but was not a huge commercial success, perhaps due to a distinct lack of airplay.Status Quo's song entitled "Pictures of Matchstick Men" was featured in Mack Dawg Productions' snowboard film "We're People Too!"At the 2005 London Live 8 concert Coldplay's Chris Martin sang the chorus to "Rockin' All Over the World" in their song, "In My Place", in deference to Status Quo.Persephone's Bees covered "Paper Plane" on their 2006 album Notes from the Underworld.Status Quo factsheet from the band's official website. This page was last modified 15:21, 10 January 2008.All text is available under the terms of
