For their debut album, see The Clash (album). The Clash live in Oslo, 1980.The Clash were an English rock band, active from 1976 to 1986, part of the original wave of UK punk rock in the late 1970s.During this time they had a revolving drumming position, including Terry Chimes who featured on the band's eponymous first album The Clash despite the fact that by this point of time he had already chosen to leave the band. The late Strummer has apologised for the firing of these two members and he admitted that it was a huge mistake to make, both creatively and progressively for the band. The Clash were a major success in the UK from the release of their first album in 1977 named 'The Clash', and became popular in the U.The Clash's attitude and style, as much as their music, influenced many other bands from the 1980s."The Only British Band That Matters," which fans later adapted into the well known title "The Only Band That Matters".They are one of the most prominent and prolific punk rock bands and their influence is far reaching.Greatest Artists of All Time.An we did and that was the start of The Clash, really.Paul Simonon came with the band's name, The Clash, after they had considered alternatives including 'The Weak Heartdrops' and 'The Psychotic Negatives'.One of the names that we had before we had the Clash was the Weak Heartdrops from the Big Youth song.It really came to my head when I start reading the newspapers and a word that kept reoccurring was the word "clash", so I thought "the Clash, what about that," to the others. And they and Bernard they November, briefly replaced by Rob Harper for the Anarchy Tour in December 1976, but was soon drafted back to record their debut album. The Clash) in 1977 to considerable success in the UK.CBS initially declined to release either in the United States, waiting until 1979 before releasing a modified version of the first album in the U.Realizing the band's potential he changed his plans and stayed in the band. With Topper Headon on drums, the Clash recorded Give 'Em Enough Rope in 1978, produced by Sandy Pearlman, whose previous credits included the American heavy metal band Blue Oyster Cult.Rude Boy, a 1980 film about the Clash, contained studio recording sessions of Give 'Em Enough Rope, and concert sequences that demonstrate why they should be considered as one of the greatest rock live acts. The Clash then recorded London Calling. The Clash planned to record and release a single every month in 1980.The band recorded their fifth album Combat Rock, which was originally planned as a double album with the title Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg, but the idea was scrapped after wrangling within the group.Simpler and more straightforward than Sandinista! The following single, "Rock the Casbah", a song about the Iranian clampdown on imports of Western music, was a Top 40 hit in the U.After Combat Rock, the Clash began to disintegrate. The band's original drummer, Terry Chimes, was brought back for the next few months.Jones and Strummer began to feud.S, playing New York's Shea Stadium.Though the band continued to tour, relationships within the band continued to fracture. The band continued to tour, but by 1983, the years of constant touring and recording took their toll. The crowd of roughly half a million was by far the biggest of the Clash's career. This was Jones' last appearance with The Clash.Strummer tried to undo that mistake and followed Jones on holiday to ask him to reform the Clash.Cortinas, and Vince White as the band's new guitarists."Out of Control" tour, and they toured heavily over the winter and into early summer. The recording sessions for Cut the Crap were chaotic, with manager Bernie Rhodes and Strummer working in Munich, Germany.Struggling with Rhodes for control of the band, Strummer returned home. The band went on a busking tour, playing in public spaces in cities throughout the UK where they played acoustic versions of their hits and popular cover tunes. After a gig in Athens, Strummer went to Spain to clear his mind.Although Howard was an adept drummer, virtually all of the percussion tracks were produced by drum machines. The Clash were effectively disbanded in early 1986, and the members went on to other projects.Joe Strummer reportedly cried and was very distraught when band's hit and its title "Rock the Casbah" were used while bombing Iraq the same year.Greatest Artists of All Time.Grosse Pointe Blank soundtracks with John Cusack. As well, he experimented with different backing bands with limited success. In 1989, he released the first of his solo albums, Earthquake Weather, which was neither a commercial nor critical success. In 1996 Strummer recorded with Black Grape (band of vocalist Shaun Ryder, ex Happy Mondays) their football anthem "England's Irie", which became a Top Ten hit.His final gig was at Liverpool Academy on 22 November 2002.Streetcore, was released posthumously to critical acclaim in 2003.After his expulsion from The Clash, Mick Jones formed Big Audio Dynamite (often shortened to B.The Clash, Paul Simonon formed a group called Havana 3am, which recorded only one album in Japan and quickly folded.Jones' third BAD album, Tighten Up Vol.Simonon was quoted in Westway to the World as saying that The Clash are over and that "suits him fine".By 1982, Topper Headon had been dismissed by the rest of the band due to the heroin addiction.Drumming Man), Headon disappeared from the music business until the filming of Letts' retrospective documentary about The Clash, Westway to The World, where he sincerely apologised for his addiction.Headon also attended a subsequent presentation to Strummer, Jones, Simonon, and Headon of a Lifetime Achievement British Music Award.Politics The band's music was often charged by a leftist political ideology. The group insisted that CBS sell their double and triple album sets London Calling and Sandinista! These "VFM" (Value For Money) principles meant that they were constantly in debt to CBS, and only started to break even around 1982.Like many early punk bands, The Clash protested against monarchy and aristocracy. However, unlike many early punk bands, The Clash rejected the overall sentiment of nihilism. The Clash's political views, especially those of Joe Strummer, were very leftist.Strummer and Jones were arrested for a string of offences from vandalism to stealing a pillowcase.Caroline Coon stood up for what The Clash were doing during this period: "Those tough, militaristic songs were what we needed as we went into Thatcherism".The benefit album released from the concerts features one song by The Clash, "Armagideon Time."By the time of the December 1979 album London Calling, the Clash were trying to maintain musically varied for a punk band, with reggae and early rock and roll influences plainly evident. Most of the album was conceived on the 18th floor of a council high rise on London's Harrow Rd, in a flat that was owned by Jones' grandmother, who frequently went to see their live concert. The album's front cover photo, shot by Kate Simon, was taken in the alleyway directly opposite the front door of the band's 'Rehearsal Rehearsals' building in Camden Market.Drummer Terry Chimes, though a full member of The Clash at the time, did not appear in the shot as he had already decided to leave the band.Lee Perry (credited with singer Junior Murvin with the composition of "Police and Thieves") heard the album whilst in London in 1976 and played it to Bob Marley, who in turn mentioned The Clash on his own track "Punky Reggae Party".In 2000 Q magazine placed The Clash at number 48 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.Tracks 2 and 5 are sung by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones.Miscellanea "I'm So Bored with the U."Protex Blue", sung by Mick Jones, is about a 1970s brand of condom. The song ends with the shouted phrase "Johnny Johnny!"British slang term for a condom."Police And Thieves" was added to the album when the band realised just how short the tracklist was."The Clash are the kind of garage band who should be returned to the garage immediately, preferably with the engine running".In July 1979, Epic released a modified version of the album for the United States market. The Clash's second album, Give 'Em Enough Rope."White Riot", rather than the original take featured on the UK album. This was another moderately successful American album for The Clash, even though the sales were likely diluted by the longstanding popularity of the UK version on the import market.Since the Clash's first U.Initial copies also contained the bonus "Groovy Times" 45.Over 56 Things You Never Knew About The Clash".Most of the debut LP The Clash was isn't a weak cut on the album.Although The Clash started off as a punk band, they were never adequately defined by that phenomenon. They were the first rock band, for instance, to use reggae rhythms and not make them sound like a gimmick (compare The Clash's extraordinary "The Guns of Brixton" with Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker," which while good sounds a bit like a novelty song, while The Clash sound like they ripped the song off some Jamaicans). For instance, check out the almost haphazard way "Jimmy Jazz" starts, as if the band can't decide whether to allow the opening riff develop into a full fledged song.Even songs that remind one vaguely of previous songs manage to sound underivative. For instance, there is more than a little Phil Spector's wall of sound in "The Card Cheat," but where do those horns come from?It is unquestionably great political rock, but more than that it is just flat out awesome rock.It is almost as if The Clash recreated on this album all the rebelliousness contained in the first rockers of the 1950s.The liner notes on the current U.Was this review helpful to you?Your vote will be counted and will appear on the product page within 24 my Led Zeppelin soaked system. Now in 1980, American rock radio consisted of songs that consisted of a really cool guitar intro, 1rst verse, chorus, 2nd verse, chorus, a really bitchin solo by Jimmy Page, Michael Schenker, or Ted Nugent, the 3rd verse, and the chorus. This is one of those rare records that never lets up from beginning to end and is truly packed with with some of the Clash's greatest songs. There is also the ultimate Clash song, "Death Or Glory", which is a culmination of everything the Clash are.About a gangster trying to settle down it opens with Joe Strummer's raspy voice singing, "Now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world and ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl" Rock and Roll doesn't get any cooler than this. This is essential for anyone who loves rock and roll and has a sense of history, of where influential music was created. This album and The Clash's debut album are the two greatest punk albums ever made.It could be, but here it is following on both sides of the Atlantic.Jam in terms of popularity, it took the Clash several years to break into the American market, and when they finally did in 1982, they imploded several months later. For a band that constantly sang about revolution and the working class, the Clash had surprisingly traditional roots.Joe Strummer (born John Graham Mellor, August 21, 1952) had spent most of his childhood in boarding school.By the time he was in his early twenties, he had busked on the streets of London and had formed a pub rock band called the 101'ers.Jones' childhood friend Paul Simonon (born December 15, 1956) joined the group as a bassist in 1976 after hearing the Sex Pistols; he replaced Tony James, who would later join Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik.Along with fellow 101'er guitarist Keith Levene, Strummer joined the revamped London SS, now renamed the Clash. The Clash performed its first concert in the summer of 1976, supporting the Sex Pistols in London.Hiring as their manager Bernard Rhodes, a former business associate of Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, the Clash set out on the Pistols' notorious Anarchy Tour late in 1976.Though only three concerts were performed on the tour, it nevertheless raised the Clash's profile and the band secured a record contract in February of 1977 with British CBS.In the spring, the Clash's first single, "White Riot," and eponymous debut album were released to great critical acclaim and sales in the U.The American division of CBS decided The Clash wasn't fit for radio play, so it decided to not release the album. The Clash, the band set out on the whirlwind White Riot tour supported by the Jam and the Buzzcocks; the tour was highlighted by a date at London's Rainbow Theatre, when the audience tore the seats out of the venue.During the White Riot tour, CBS pulled "Remote Control" off the album as a single, and as a response, the Clash recorded "Complete Control" with reggae icon Lee "Scratch" Perry.Throughout 1977, Strummer and Jones were in and out of jail for a myriad of minor indiscretions, ranging from vandalism to stealing a pillowcase, while Simonon and Headon were arrested for shooting racing pigeons with an air gun.The Clash's outlaw image was bolstered considerably by such events, but the band also began to branch out into social activism, such as headlining a Rock Against Racism concert.Pearlman gave Give 'Em Enough Rope a clean but powerful sound designed to break the American market.Britain, debuting at number two on the charts.Early in 1979, the Clash began their first American tour, entitled "Pearl Harbor '79."EP The Cost of Living, which featured a cover of the Bobby Fuller Four's "I Fought the Law."Following the later summer release of The Clash in America, the group set out on its second U.That fascination became the driving force behind their breakthrough double album, London Calling.Retailing at the price of a single album, the record debuted at number nine on the U.The Clash successfully toured the U.Rude Boy was released in England.Headon left the band shortly after the sessions finished; the press statement said he parted with the group due to political differences, but it was later revealed that the split was due to his heavy drug use.The album was the Clash's most commercially successful effort, entering the U.American Top Ten in early 1983, thanks to the Top Ten hit single "Rock the Casbah."During the fall of 1982, the Clash opened for the Who on their farewell tour.Though the tour helped Combat Rock scale the U.Although the Clash were at the height of their commercial powers in 1983, the band was beginning fall apart.During the summer, the band headlined the U.In September, Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon fired Mick Jones because he "drifted apart from the original idea of the Clash."Jones formed Big Audio Dynamite the following year, while the Clash hired guitarists Vince White and Nick Sheppard to fill his vacancy.Throughout 1984, the band toured America and Europe, testing the new lineup. The revamped Clash finally released their first album, Cut the Crap, in November. The album was greeted with overwhelmingly poor reviews and sales; it would later be disowned by Strummer and Simonon.Early in 1986, Strummer and Simonon decided to permanently disband the Clash. He also scored Permanent Record (1988) and Cox's Walker (1987).By 1991, he had quietly drifted away from the spotlight.Black Grape's 1996 Top Ten hit "England's Irie."Though Strummer and Simonon were both quiet, and Jones was busy
