| The Faint at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.Formed in Omaha, Nebraska, The Faint was originally known as Norman Bailer, a reference to Norman Mailer.The band Norman Bailer also included Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes, with whom The Faint toured in 2005.The band originally consisted of Clark Baechle, Todd Fink (formerly Todd Baechle), and Joel Petersen.After adding Matt Bowen, The Faint released Media, which established them within a small, national community of fans.Wave Arcade, towards a more dance and techno influenced sound.The album was an underground hit.Partway through the creation of the morose Danse Macabre, The Faint added Dapose, a death metal guitarist formerly of LEAD.Danse Macabre was also a critical and commercial success and has helped to establish a wider fanbase for the band.On December 12, 2005, The Faint announced that they have moved out of The Orifice (a rented out warehouse they used to record Wet from Birth) and into a new space known only as ENAMEL to record their next album.Column on American Recordings

Rate this artist!Their sound may be full of energy and flair with strong influences of new wave and '80s electronics, but the music of the Faint is dark and brooding.Had the pop music of 1988 continued unabated and fallen into a vicious cycle of desperation and frustration, the Faint would be the false idols to which aspiring artists made their sacrifice.It was 1994 and Joel, Clark and I (todd), and our friend Conor (Oberst) were sitting around on the cement outside of a Slowdown Virginia show.Still glowing from the experience, we decided to start our own group.But by show time we had accumulated the 9 songs we thought we needed in order to perform.With those songs we continued to play coffee shops and basements, punk clubs and bars while we tried to figure out what we wanted our band to sound like.We loved Slowdown Virginia and a couple of other local Omaha bands, but we wanted to find a sound that was our own.Lots of other people also joined and left over the following few years.It was a mix of a bunch of different styles of indie rock.That was when we started playing out of town and being matched up with similar bands each night.Joel and I quit playing guitars.From our point of view, synthesizers seemed to have a limitless and almost magical quality to them.Magical in the sense that you could create a keyboard sound out of almost nothing, and have it perfectly fit your musical disposition.The songs started sounding different and a bit more upbeat, which went well with our vision of a more active live show (at the time, that meant fog and strobed garden lighting).The keyboards we had access to were pretty crappy and from the early 1980's.In hindsight, I think that our concept of what keyboards were and what you could do with them was probably very similar to the ideas bands had when those instruments were new.With no electronic music experience, we just played what came naturally to us, which was keyboard music from when we were youngsters in the music video age of the 1980's.Wave Arcade, all the work (fun) had paid off.At this point we had met the only real goal we had, which was to be able to play music the way we wanted it to sound, and to know that a group of people would be there, in whichever city, to see us.It was time to make a new record.All of us had quit our jobs and school in order to accommodate our touring schedule.For the first time, we were all doing something with our lives that we could believe in, rather than working toward someone else's goal.We realized that the best days of the band might be over, but we figured that even if The Faint went away, we'd rather be creating things and surviving off of peanut butter crackers than spending all day wasting away at a boring job.And, i suppose, this ultimately became the main lyrical theme for Danse Macabre.We heard it differently after having attempted it ourselves.We started to fantasize about real dance clubs playing our songs.His death metal band Lead had recently broken up and we wanted his help with visual design and guitar.Danse Macabre did surprisingly well, which helped us buy the video projection equipment we'd been wanting to add to the live show.New faint songs seemed impossible to write.But once we got our practice schedule back in effect, everything began to come together.We met there every weekday for about a year, kind of like a normal office job.Well, I just heard the mixed and mastered version for the first time today and, ummm.I'm not exactly sure what that's supposed to mean, but i've opened up a bit with my lyrics.This is also the first time we have done one of clark's songs (Phone Call).Mike Mogis (of Bright Eyes) produced the album with us and made tons of excellent contributions.Wet From Birth isn't a direct reference to Stella, but it was awesome to have a real live person created during our recording session.The title actually comes from the song "Birth" that I wrote about myself being born.Wet From Birth is also a play on the phrase "wet behind the ears" which is usually said of people who are naive or immature."Visit other CNET Networks sites: Select SiteBNETCHOWCNET.Formed in Omaha, Nebraska, The Faint was originally known as Norman Bailer, a reference to Norman Mailer.The band Norman Bailer also included Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes, with whom The Faint toured in 2005.Interview at wenn's rockt!Clark from The Faint will be dj'ing.Tue May 29 17:48:00 UTC 2007').Mon May 21 23:46:35 UTC 2007').Sat May 19 01:14:23 UTC 2007').Rock on XPN has tickets for you to win to the next Making Time party, next Friday, May 25 at Pure nightclub here in Philly.Fri Apr 13 22:45:03 UTC 2007').Without producing an album in nearly three years, the Faint are currently on the North American tour circuit.I:LI) that they are currently hammering out another album, Saddle Creek has neither denied nor confirmed...Thu Dec 07 20:05:32 UTC 2006').The Faint last night
