the bands who supported "Vindicated!""The amazing thing about the Fleshtones is that every night for the last thirty years they have consistently been the best live band on earth.Fleshtones have embodied the very essence of rock and roll. And in my own defense, that fire that Keith and I started in France was really a very small fire. They were birthed at CBGB along with the Talking Heads, The Ramones, Blondie and Television...James Brown to the Police...While their peers exited the Lower East Side scene of the late seventies covered in cool, The Fleshtones exited covered only in sweat.Fleshtones that stopped being cool.No one told them they needed to be distant to be hip.No one told them that not having a Top 40 hit or a gold record was a reason to quit. But now it seems that their years of dogged perseverance might finally pay off.The Fleshtones just tapped the keg.Sunday was easily the best night. The Sonics and while the sound was decent where I was on Friday (since I was mostly getting the stage mix), tonight it was better. The Wildebeests were absolutely fantastic.Give It Up Now", "Soapy", and "She Pays The Rent" (and many more, including an encore of "No Reason To Complain".The Fleshtones were in their native habitat, Greenpoint, and they were just fantastic. They deserve that kind of adulation. My favorite part came in the pushup song. But the whole set was fantastic.Forums and used by permission of the author.Photo taken by Eric Fusco.Baltimore, Maryland 21201) featuring The Fleshtones, The Ubangis and The Hall Monitors.Plus costume contest with groovy York, the quartet's origins lie just a few miles north in Queens, where in 1975 Streng and original bass player Marek Pakulski rented "The House," as it was infamously known, and found instruments down in the basement. To quote Keith: "How and why The Fleshtones started was that there was a place to do it!"Countless "Blue Whale Bashes," Lower East Side sightings, and an endless string of gigs and records later, The Fleshtones continue to record and perform with a wit, passion, and energy that few bands can top. While 2003's Do You Swing?Miller's recordings boast a bit more production police and nuance, while Diamond captured the Fleshtones while they were fired up and rocking hard, and when you put it all together one gets the best of both worlds.Fleshtones haven't stopped writing cool songs and playing them right, and Beachhead is one solid blast of Super Rock thunder that will get the party started. When The Fleshtones first appeared on the New York City scene in 1976 they were a decidedly retro outfit, celebrating the glorious abandon of sixties garage bands. With the passage of time they've become a tradition unto themselves.Sixteen albums, periods of furious activity and the occasional hiatus, and they're still at it.Beachhead continues to find them on a roll. The band's strength is their ability to avoid sounding like a museum piece, writing songs that would could have thrived forty years ago, but which are right at home now.The ascendancy of the White Stripes and The Strokes has helped shine a well deserved light on The Fleshtones untainted rocking bravado.Get the Brooklyn a Paris(2006) DVD live a la maroquinerie ,Big Enough rec,Didier Pasquier.Three decades ago in Queens, New York, Keith Streng and Marek Pakulski found some guitars in a basement in a house they were renting. One day Peter Zaremba, an art student friend with a harmonica, long bangs, and a manic vision, dropped by the house, lined up at the keg, and named the band The Fleshtones.B, disco, and Lost In Space to garage, frat rock, and Mexican horror flicks. In 1990, Ken Fox joined the goofy mayhem on bass.Zaremba explains the new album's title: "'Take A Good Look!Gordon Spaeth's favorite tag lines whenever the Fleshtones were attracting unwanted (but usually warranted) attention, which was often!"Recorded in Detroit at Jim Diamond's Ghetto Recorder and in the Lower East Side of New York City at legend Ivan Julian's N.Hed studio, Take A Good Look wears those two cities' muscled strength and sonic bravado well.Long live The Fleshtones!"NYC star who played with Richard Hell and the Voidoids as well as the Isley Brothers, Matthew Sweet, and Shriekback says, "I knew the Fleshtones from the early days of CBGB.The Fleshtones Take A Good Look out of their own windows and sing about what they see, for better or for worse: the beloved skyline, the roaming hipsters who don't know what garage music really is and the friends and loved ones everywhere.Look out, they're on their way! |
