| Ireland's leading Internet Infrastructure Provider.Find out more about us and how we can help you.The Frames is an influential Irish band based mainly in Dublin.In 2007 the Frames toured Australia and New Zealand as the support act for Bob Dylan.The name The Frames arose from Hansard's habit, at a young age, of fixing the bicycles of many of his friends.The large number of bicycle frames lying around his house led neighbours to dub it the "house with the frames".In a 2001 interview, Hansard said, "I worked in a bicycle shop for a little while, but the name came from...The Frames house, much to my mother's distaste, she hated it.But my garden was full of frames, old bikes, I would make up bikes for my friends out of all the old bikes.The Frames always collaborated closely with other groups that emerged from the buskers on Grafton Street, Dublin where Hansard had started his music career.Chocolate Factory, all of which are captured on the live album Set List.As of 2007, the band consists of Glen Hansard (vocals, guitar), Joe Doyle (bass guitar, vocals), Colm Mac Con Iomaire (violin, keyboard and vocals), Rob Bochnik (lead guitar) and Johnny Boyle (drums).Various people played drums during 2003 and 2004, including Graham Hopkins who drummed on Dance the Devil, Burn the Maps, and the band's latest album The Cost.On both versions of the album Fitzcarraldo, the band went by the moniker The Frames DC, to avoid confusion with a United States band.References

a9AdsViewNamespace.Click on a tag to find related items, discussions, and people.See all 404 customer reviews...The easiest way to shoot video reviews.There is no question that the Frames are a quality band.After several albums either somewhat or considerably below the high standards set by FITZCARRALDO, they have released a new album, THE COST, that is very nearly as great as that one.Truth be told, there is very little to separate the two in quality.What is amazing is that it took them so long.The Frames or U2 is the better back.U2, while I have frequently listened to one or another Frames album.Glen Hansard as a vocalist to Bono.The word on the Frames is that they are a mediocre studio band but an astonishing live band (I unfortunately have never heard them live), a distinction they hold with other great live acts.The strategy on this album was to record the songs in very little time in the studio, hopefully to maintain some of the power of their stage performances.Whatever the reason, this isn't at all the same band that sometimes can sound a tad bland in a studio recording.And while there is some great playing on the recording, the engineers keep Hansard's incredible voice front and center."Sad Songs," which sounds like it could be a Top Forty hit, and the title track "The Cost."The former driven by wonderful hooks and infectious melodies, one of those songs that is so lovely that you love it almost on the first listen."The Cost" is far more minimalistic, almost a duet between distorted guitar and Hansard, with just enough percussion to remind you that the drummer is still there.The song, like other cuts on the album, could easily slip over into bathos, but they keep the touch just right.While the Frames have not always been this good on record, they have been at least this good once before.Maybe they have turned a corner and this represents what they will do from here on out.Dearly loved and appreciated in their native Ireland and huge in the Czech Republic (interestingly enough), The Frames haven't quite managed to achieve that same level of success elsewhere.Where that might mean creative death for some bands, for The Frames it only serves to spotlight the groups strengths.Burn The Maps', it's pleasing to hear that The Frames have lost none of their trademark intensity in the process.There are frequent moments of exhilarating beauty here (especially when Colm Mac Con Iomaire's soaring violin enters the fray).Then there's frontman Glen Hansard's voice, which remains one of the most exhilarating in rock music.For all we know it does, on The Cost he seems to chisel heartfelt yearning into every lyric.As if to add balance, other tunes on The Cost are content just to simmer, without needing to come to the boil.Dripping with gorgeous melancholy and raw elegance, The Cost may be The Frames most compelling creation yet.Never haveing heard of The Frames, I read a very good review of "The Cost" and ordered it.The Cost

In addition to the fundamental problems discussed above, there are several minor problems with the current implementation of frames.These problems will go away over the next few years, but for designs done in 1997 (and maybe even 1998) they will remain a reason to minimize use of frames.Netscape 2 which had one of the worst usability problems to be seen on the Web so far: the BACK button in the browser simply didn't work with framed sites.Remember that many people don't view Web browsing as a central part of their lives and therefore don't invest much effort in keeping up with the changing tools.When It's OK to Use Frames
