| Along with John Mayall and Alexis Korner, Bond was one of the great catalytic figures of '60s rock in Britain.Biography
Bond first gained attention as a jazz saxophonist as a member of the Don Rendell Quintet.Bond was the primary songwriter, and he also produced the group's two studio albums, The Sound of '65 and There's a Bond Between Us.One song Bruce and Baker originally recorded with Bond, "Train Time," later wound up in the repertoire of Cream. In the years which followed the breakup of his band, Bond's mental and physical health deteriorated. He exhibited symptoms of what today would be called bipolar disorder: erratic, manic episodes, wild mood swings, and periods of intense depression.Bond did some solo recording and session work and eventually turned up in Ginger Baker's Air Force.Herbs (1971), among other sessions).Throughout his career he had been hampered with severe bouts of drug addiction, and in January 1973 had spent a month in hospital after a nervous breakdown.Friends agree that he was off drugs, although he was becoming increasingly obsessed with the occult (he believed he was Aleister Crowley's son).Miller Freeman Press, 1998.Graham Bond: The Mighty Shadow. This page was last modified 12:31, 10 January 2008.See Copyrights for details.Throughout his career Bond made no attempt to become a major commercial property, he always seemed more interested in making music to please himself, and in pioneering new sounds. He joined Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated in '62 and then formed his own group, The Graham Bond Trio, the following year. They expanded to a quartet with the addition of guitarist John McLaughlin. It was at this point that they became The Organisation.Smith and drummer Jon Hiseman, but never recaptured the heights of his earlier work.In the late '60's Bond went to America for a year before returning to London where he worked with several bands including Ginger Baker's Airforce.Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?ZZ Top Still Have Great Legs After 25 Year...Brian Auger, Jon Lord and Keith Emerson are just some who were influenced by his aggressive organ playing.Graham and Ginger to support their habits.Charles Mingus influenced modern jazz.Graham became increasingly erratic due to his addiction.Ginger ate humble pie and the rest is the Cream of the story.Graham formed Magick, recorded with Pete Brown and rejoined Ginger in Airforce in 1970.See all her photos from events, concerts and more.Rhonda Vincent
