a real event in 1954, when a team from a tiny high school in the farmlands of Indiana rose against all odds to win the state basketball championship.In 1954, Milan was a quiet rural town in the southeastern part of Indiana, with a high school of 161 total students, 75 being boys.Angelo Pizzo, the scriptwriter, a great deal of fictionalization was necessary for the Hollywood feature "because their lives were not dramatic enough...But how truthful is the film?Indiana High School Basketball Champs: Back Row (left to right) Glen Butte, Kenny Wendelman, Rollin Cutter, Bill Jordan, Clarence Kelly, asst.High coach, Roger Schroder.It is a story that bears repeating.Muncie Central has since been a rallying cry for every small school in the state.South Bend Central (the school the fictional Hickory Hucksters defeated for the state title in Hoosiers).The nucleus of that team returned to form the '54 championship team.So, in a scene recreated in the film, he measured the height of the basketball goal in the monstrous Hinkle Fieldhouse as the team took the floor for a practice, to illustrate that it was exactly the same height as the goal in the tiny gym at the team's hometown school.Daniel Motto later told the South Bend Tribune, was meant to reassure the team that, despite the enormous size of the field house where the state finals were being played, the team should "cast out their fear."Motto said when he watched "Hoosiers" for the first time, he sat on the edge of his seat, waiting to make sure that scene was in it.When it was, Motto said, he knew the movie was truly inspired by Wood.The Indians were paced in scoring by senior Ray Craft.Plump's famous final second shot assured the championship victory for the Indians, and the Indiana High School Athletic than seven years had returned.After retiring from basketball he sold life insurance for many years.Finally deciding to make that notoriety work for him, Plump opened a restaurant called 'Plump's Last Shot' in Indianapolis.It's filled with memorabilia from the 1954 state championship.He has two cameos in the movie: Ray is the person who greets the Huskers when they arrive at the state finals, and the guy who tells the team that it's time to take the court for the final game."Hoosiers" is one hour and 54 minutes long."From the time the ball was in bounds after the final timeout, the movie was accurate."PLACE IN HISTORY: "Hoosiers" was called the best sports film ever made by Marv Albert, and was nominated for two Academy Awards.PLACE IN HISTORY: The Indianapolis Star said the "Milan Miracle" was the top sports story in Indiana history.ENROLLMENT: Hickory High School's total enrollment of 161 is so small that it can only field a team of six players.ENROLLMENT: Milan High did have an enrollment of only 161, but 58 of the 73 boys in the school tried out for the team.Milan High had 10 team members in 1954.Navy, which he had joined because he was fired from his previous job as a national champion collegiate coach for hitting one of his players.Wood often said, "God was coaching that team, not me."FORMER COACH: The previous coach has died, and the team's star player, Jimmy, doesn't want to play basketbal anymore because he's still grieving.FORMER COACH: The previous coach, Herman "Snort" Grinstead, was fired for ordering new uniforms against the superintendent's went to see it on a Sunday afternoon, knowing nothing about it other than "It's a basketball movie."When you think about it, how many movies were so memorable, you actually remember everything about the day when you watched it for the first time?Anyway, to celebrate the 250th viewing Friday afternoon, I kept a running diary.Noon: As Brent Musberger would say, you're looking liiiiiiive at the Sports Guy Mansion!Feel free to sing along at home.There's Norman Dale driving through backwoods Indiana in the early a.Jimmy Chitwood makes his first appearance (shooting hoops in an empty gym and ignoring coach Dale).Do you realize that, in the entire movie, they only show Jimmy missing four shots?Translation: Jimmy's a head case."Look mister, there's two kinds of dumb ...Leave the ball, will ya, George?This one's been bothering me for 16 years.Whit and Rade (the point guard who gets in trouble during the opening game for shooting too much) are actually brothers: the Butcher brothers.Subtle plot nuance, the kind of thing that takes nearly 180 viewings to pick up."Five players on the floor functioning as one single unit ...Butcher ushering the disgruntled Hickory residents out of the gym so coach can run an uninterrupted practice.It doesn't get much better than Mr.It takes the people of Hickory quite a while to warm up to coach Norman Dale.Coach visits Jimmy (shooting hoops in his backyard), then tries to win him over with this beauty: "I don't care if you play or not."Jimmy makes his first 13 shots in the sequence, missing only the final one.Here's a good trivia question: What is Barbara Hershey's character's name in this movie?Answer in the second half of the column.That was even dumber than Jim Cleamons putting Jason Kidd in the triangle offense back in '96.Ever since one of my readers pointed out that coach Dale was a little shaky as a game coach, it has changed the way I watched this movie.And since Hickory played with four players down the stretch, everyone really hates the coach now.He was like a young Danny Ainge.Also, did you know that everyone in the "Hoosiers" cast played college ball in real life except ...Who's up for some hate sex?All right, I made that up ..."Um, yeah, I'm not feeling well ...Another savvy move from coach Dale.Hey, let's bring the town drunk aboard!Time for the "Should we fire coach Dale?"Barbara telling everyone "I think it would be a mistake to let him go ...She's officially digging Norm.Jimmy's dramatic entrance, capped off by his first three lines of the movie: "I got something to say," "I don't know if it'll make any change, but I figure it's time for me to start playing ball," and "One other thing ...Butcher ripping up the votes, smiling and simply saying, "Coach stays."Always fun to imitate at a bar with your friends ...And no, I'm not drunk again.This might be my favorite 10 minutes in the middle of any sports movie.And yes, the "four passes before every shot" rule has officially been thrown out the window.My favorite line of the movie: "I didn't think I could cut it the other night, either, but after what Jimmy did, it would take the Indiana National Guard to get me out of here."It's a little Chili Davis at the Sports Guy Mansion right now.Apparently he rejoined the team, because he just made a big steal in the final seconds of the game we're watching.Maybe he just showed up for practice that week and nobody noticed.Anyway, with coach Dale already kicked out, Shooter needs to come up with the winning play ...Boys, don't get caught watching the paint dry!"Not his strongest night."That's a gutless way to win!Has anyone ever done a better job doing "basketball coach" things in a sports movie?When you think about it, who else could have played coach Dale?And we're in the locker room.Maybe he wasn't the best game coach, but nobody belted out those pregame speeches like Norman Dale."Buddy, 41 is killing us.Think of chewing gum ...And I think we all know what flavor it was ...I've always wondered about that.Meanwhile, Flatch's stitches just got busted open again, which raises the question, "How was he cleared to play in the state finals after this game?"Was there like 10 days between games?Strap proceeds to light it up.This is like seeing Tony Clark come up for the Red Sox with the bases loaded.This has all the makings of a Level One "Stomach Punch" game.I'm assuming it was the writer of "Hoosiers," Angelo Pizzo).Convicts taking on the Guards in "The Longest Yard," Rocky losing to Creed in "Rocky," and the Good Nazi standing up to applaud Pele's bicycle kick goal in "Victory."Didn't you love the Good Nazi?It's like watching your grandparents make out.Note: I'm currently writing the script for "Hoosiers 2," where Hickory loses to Holland in state quarters and Barbara immediately leaves Norm for the South Bend Central coach.By the way, her name was "Myra Fleener" in the movie.Flatch visits Shooter in the hospital ...School Special" portion of the movie.Couldn't they have thrown in a scene where Jimmy Chitwood has a threesome in the back of a '47 Chrysler with two Hickory High groupies?Time for the 1951 state finals: Hickory against South Bend Central (enrollment: 2,800).So I always end up thinking about him during the final 15 minutes of "Hoosiers."Merle: "Let's win this one for all the small schools that never had a chance to get here."Flatch: "I want to win for my Dad."David put his hand in the bag and took out a stone and flung it, and it struck the Philistine in the head, and he fell to the ground.Coach: "I love you guys."Hickory score yet, but the clock reads 7:34 ...Jimmy Chitwood, for God's sake).We also see Flatch score twice, and Wade and Buddy each scoring once, so we see 34 of the 42 points in all.See, that's why I'm here, for dumb things like that.After Hickory scores, the South Bend coach never calls timeout, leading to another turnover.After another Hickory basket, no timeout ...Tie game, 20 seconds to play, and we've already established that A) Jimmy has scored roughly 30 of Hickory's 40 points, and B) he's hotter than the Equator.Jimmy takes two dribbles, crosses over, goes up with it ...That always kills me for some reason.Cut to the cornfields, the setting sun, some sound bites and a little kid shooting at the gym, followed by the camera slowly honing in on the 1952 State
