In addition to being a religious scholar and clergy, a rabbi also acted as a civil judge in all cases in which both parties were Jews.Haskalah followers advocated "coming out of the ghetto", not just physically but also mentally and spiritually.Emancipation in January 1, 1882.Prior to the Dreyfus Affair, Herzl had been an assimilationist, but after seeing how France treated its loyal Jewish subjects, he proposed building a separate Jewish state. The party didn't survive the Shoah, the Holocaust. The territorialists, who had split from the Zionists after the Seventh Zionist Congress in 1905, called for creation of a sufficiently large and compact Jewish territory (or territories), not necessarily in the Land of Israel and not necessarily fully autonomous.Martin Buber, rabbi Yehuda Ashlag, Isaac Nachman Steinberg and Gustav Landauer, were religious or religiously inclined and often referred to the Torah, Talmud and other traditional Judaic sources, claiming that anarchist ideas are deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition.Jews are also active in government in many of the countries in which they live, as well as in Jewish community organizations that often take political positions. While Diaspora Jews have also been represented in the conservative side of the political spectrum, even politically conservative Jews have tended to support pluralism more consistently than many other elements of the political right. No one secular group represents the entire Jewish community, and there is often significant internal debate among Jews about the stances these organizations take on affairs dealing with the Jewish community as a whole, such as antisemitism and Israeli policies.Oxford University Press, 2001.Lucky for us, Michael Dorf wasn't so dumb. But perhaps the most remarkable facet of the Knitting Factory is the sense one gets of a "Jewish underground."Even for Dorf, the new label is Jewishly diverse.Recent releases on JAM include, With Every Breath, the Shabbat music at Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, and a collection from the Middle Eastern inflected group, Zohar, which offers a unique blend of Sephardic liturgical music and postmodern jazz, complete with the samplings of one DJ Olive.Zohar, like many of their JAM labelmates, manage to be expressly modern while remaining unequivocally Jewish."When it comes to the JAM label, we're trying to bolster our company's vision to support the alternative side of the spectrum," Dorf explains in a recent telephone interview.Fiddler on the Roof, the compilation demonstrates the eclecticism that has come to define the Knitting Factory. He was first introduced to Jewish music at summer camp, where singing and dancing were an integral part of the experience, and where he met the friends who would later form Swamp Thing. But "it struck a chord," he says, acknowledging the bad pun, when many of the musicians on the downtown scene began exploring their Jewish identities.Jewish and not, begs the question of how Dorf himself defines Jewish music. While Dorf is first to admit the elusiveness of easy answers, he believes that Jewish music runs the gamut from the obvious, klezmer, to improvised jazz, to traditional prayers.Cuban music, Dorf cites Ribot's trademark "Jewish signature.""His approach to the music is coming from someone who is Jewish culturally," Dorf says.Would "Blowing in the Wind" one day evolve from a campfire medley to a Jewish classic?Dorf boils Jewish music down to inspiration and influence.Beck, for example, is an artist with Jewish roots but not a Jewish musician. In The Forward, writer Michael Berk questions whether JAM "is broad enough to admit all varieties of musical experience ...But to Dorf, there's nothing wrong with getting folks to come check out the music."It's not just a New York phenomenon."Hasidic New Wave, for example, a JAM group that was recently busted for smoking a joint in front of the Knit, uses Hasidic melodies as the starting point for musical exploration. And Dorf, too, is ready to subscribe."But as far as fads go in pop America, 10 years is more than a fad; it becomes a real trend.Sign in to get personalized for your shopping session. To set the record straight, I must admit I am a novice when it comes to the various strains of "Jewish Alternative Music."The Paradox Trio (actually a quartet) focuses on music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans which has a strong Middle Eastern flavor. He has written music and performed for Orange Then Blue and the Les Miserables Brass Band. His activities include gigs with Bulgarian clarinettist Ivo Papasov and has a strong musical interest in his own Rom (Gypsy) heritage as well as Turkish, Albanian and Yugoslavian traditions. He started out in classical music but now dwells in the ethnic groove domain. The Paradox Trio has won prizes in Germany for their debut CD and provided soundtracks for the silent classic films, Un Chien Andalou and Battleship Potemkin. At times the music is presented "straight" or nearly so, steeping the listener in a kind of contemplative swirl of sound. At other times, this music is clearly a plastic material pulled and strained to a near breaking point and then dissected and reassembled into interesting new shapes.Once again, Caine takes a daring approach to a body of music and extracts unexpected depths from it.The entire CD reflects this sensibility by floating the listener in a wash of spiritual emotion, even if the listener is not familiar with this tradition. In other words, the music communicates by directly tapping into the listener's emotions, generating a contemplative groove through a staggering variety of rhythms, tempos and settings.Bensoussan flavors the group with his cantoring in the Sephardic tradition.Durham Freeway and Campus Drive.Instead of coming to terms with the 20th century, the discussion was ended with the destruction of the community. If you thought last year's Klezmania compilation was fun, but perhaps a bit tame, you'll feel right at home with JAM's premier release, a compilation called "Guide to the Perplexed.""Hanukkah Bush" require a bit of musical thought.Having the Christmas Tree, knowing it wasn't "my" holiday symbol, but at the same time, not finding the proffered symbols of "my" people nearly so seductive, and not particularly encouraged to do so ...There are a lot of bands here that I have long thought of as connected to the Knitting Factory: Hasidic New Wave, Paradox Trio, The Klezmatics, David Krakauer are all represented by the type of stuff anyone familiar with their stuff will find familiar. To me, that is not the most interesting part of the edge, but I can't deny that a lot a lot of people seem to like the Klezmatics' "Reefer Song."On the other hand, the rescue of a cut by Naftule's Dream from a period when they were setting forgotten Yiddish poetry to new avant garde music is incredibly welcome.I'd have expected to hear something from the New Orleans Klezmer AllStars, or New Klezmer Trio, or even John Zorn (who has his own Knitting Factory label, "tzadik".But, this is still a damn good representation of good, interesting, fun, Jewish edge music. And it brings new music to the fore.Glenn Dickson) 3:08 Play a RealAudio 3.Andy Teirstein) 5:50 Play a RealAudio 3.Neshama Carlebach: "Gam Ki Elech" (trad.Sound files hosted by The Yiddish Voice.Circumcision is not universal among Jews.Circumcision conflicts with significant Jewish laws and values.Of all the myths that Jews believe about circumcision, the one that is paramount is the belief that all Jews circumcise.Bound by this burden to comply with social expectations, most Jewish parents do not recognize that circumcision is a choice. As a result, many parents submit to the pressure and then discover only too late, perhaps after witnessing the circumcision of their son, that they wish they had chosen differently. Some parents report that if they could take back one decision, it would be their son's circumcision.Endorsed by five rabbis. We represent Jews around the world who question circumcision (bris or brit milah).Jews, those Jews who generally evaluate an idea not solely based on its conformance with the Torah, but also in light of its agreement with reason and experience. The arguments in favor of circumcision are familiar and readily available. It is an opportunity for Jews who take this position to declare themselves and to be counted.Dispelling the myth outside of the Jewish community that all Jews circumcise will help to support and expand the American and international circumcision debate.Another purpose of the Jewish Circumcision Resource Center is to gather and disseminate information to interested Jews about the experiences of those who choose to keep their children intact and whole. We empathize with and respect these feelings. However, we are compelled to break the silence that supports circumcision and raise these questions out of deep caring and compassion for Jews generally and Jewish male infants in particular.Based on our contacts with hundreds of Jews who do not circumcise in the United States and in countries around the world, there is growing support for this view.English society as a whole.East End but others soon appeared throughout the city and the provinces.Germany before World War I (1912).Israel and have
