| The Lounge Lizards are a jazz group formed in 1978 by saxophone player John Lurie; they should not be confused with country satire group the Austin Lounge Lizards.Initially a tongue in cheek "fake jazz" combo, drawing on punk rock and no wave as much as jazz, The Lounge Lizards have since become respected for their creative and distinctive sound. The record received positive reviews, with one scribe noting "while there's definitely great respect shown here for the jazz tradition, the members are obviously coming at it from different backgrounds."Especially notable is Lindsay's noisy guitar: He had earlier honed his distinctive, untutored and unconventional technique with the band DNA.Their sole record, 1983's Live from the Drunken Boat, remains the only Lounge Lizards album never to have been issued on compact disc.New York jazz scene: Roy Nathanson (saxophone), Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), Marc Ribot (guitar), and Erik Sanko (bass guitar), Dougie Bowne and EJ Rodriguez on drums and percussion. The Luries formed a new version of the Lounge Lizards in the early 1990s; prominent members included Steven Bernstein (trumpet), Michael Blake (saxophone), Oren Bloedow (bass guitar), Dave Tronzo (guitar), Calvin Weston (drums) and Billy Martin (percussion). All text is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License.Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is a computer game first released in 1987, the first part of the Leisure Suit Larry series. It used the Adventure Game Interpreter (AGI) engine. An important part of the game is that the player has to take care of his money, which is spent whenever he travels by taxi or buys things.Details

It's hard to believe, but the Lounge Lizards will soon turn twenty. And while Lounge
Lizards leader John Lurie has long been the very personification of downtown
cool, his music has a clear spirituality, making for an exhilarating blend
of transcendence and street savvy.It's
all on ample display on the Lounge Lizards' stunning new album, Queen
of All Ears."But is it for the recipient or for the
given?"In the studio you go for something more elegant, more refined."It's kind of
like opening and closing the record with a prayer", Lurie says.Circus" (besides being an outstanding
composer, John Lurie also has the best song titles in the business)."And more than that, they have to have the capability of loving
each other. Then after about three years we tried to
take it seriously and it was a disaster.Lurie had
one of many musical epiphanies when he was in Morocco for the filming of
"The Last Temptation of Christ" and jammed with some local Gnawan musicians.Lurie became a favorite of some of the world's foremost directors,
appearing in "Paris, Texas" (Wim Wenders, 1983), "The Last Temptation of
Christ" (Martin Scorsese, 1988) and "Wild At Heart" (David Lynch, 1989).And Lurie's screen time continues as he writes, directs and stars in
his own TV comedy series "Fishing with John".Lurie travelling the globe with the likes of Tom Waits, Dennis Hopper,
Willem Dafoe, Matt Dillon and director Jim Jarmusch (the fearsomely, eclectic
soundtrack is also upcoming on Lurie's label, Strange
and Beautiful Music).Jarmusch movies came out", Lurie says. What they're all drawn to is the undeniable magic to a Lounge Lizards
show."We
work hard on this intricate thing and we perform it almost like it's a
religious rite", says Lurie.Does that make Lurie some
sort of downtown Jim Jones?Lurie is unafraid of either traditional
beauty or the mix of intelligence and pleasure".Lizards alumni include Arto
Lindsay, Marc Ribot, slide guitar virtuoso
Dave Tronzo, Bob Dylan musical director Tony Garnier, Skeleton Key's Erik
Sanko, Elysian Fields' Oren Bloewod, Billy Martin and John Medeski of Medeski,
Martin and Wood."There's
nothing like this stuff, nothing like it", Lurie agrees. |
