The band had its roots in a bohemian folk group called The Mugwumps, who played coffee houses and small clubs, some members of which split to form the Lovin' Spoonful and the Mamas and the Papas."Blues in the Bottle", the Lovin' Spoonful endeared themselves to radio stations across the United States.Other hits were "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind", "Six O'Clock", and "Younger Girl".Grateful Dead were part of the West Coast acoustic folk music scene when the Lovin' Spoonful came to town while on tour. They credited the Lovin' Spoonful concert as a fateful experience, after which they decided to leave the folk scene and "go electric".The Lovin' Spoonful's music was also featured in Woody Allen's first feature film, What's Up, Tiger Lily.Zal Yanovsky quit the band after the album You're a Big Boy Now was released in May 1967, primarily due to a famous drug bust in San Francisco, in which Yanovsky was arrested for possession of marijuana and pressured by police to name his supplier.Yanovsky's replacement was Jerry Yester, formerly of the Modern Folk Quartet.Without the power of Sebastian, the Lovin' Spoonful lasted only until the end of 1968, with very little success, and split up following their album Revolution '69.There were resurgences of interest in the Lovin' Spoonful upon their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, as well as with the release of the 1995 film Die Hard: With a Vengeance which used their song, "Summer in the City", during its opening credits.Paul Simon film One Trick Pony in 1980.The Best of the Lovin' Spoonful, Vol.John Sebastian Song Book Vol.Mode Label)
Pop History (197?This page was last modified 00:34, 25 December 2007.See Copyrights for details. The core of The Lovin' Spoonful were John Sebastian, who was born on March 17th, 1944 in New York, and Zalman Yanovsky, who was born on 19th December 1944 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They first met as guests invited to Cass Elliot's house to watch the Beatles' U.They played guitar together through the night and discussed the possibility of forming a rock group. At the time, Sebastian was a Greenwich Village folkie and sometime member of the Even Dozen Jug Band and Yanovsky was a guitarist with the Nova Scotia folk group, The Halifax Three. When they disbanded in June 1964, Yanovsky was briefly involved in the Mugwumps (with Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot and James Hendricks).Doherty and Elliot went on to form one half of The Mamas and The Papas
With Yanovsky at loose ends again, the seeds for a rock group with John Sebastian were sewn in January 1965.It wasn't long until the band had won a residency at the Night Owl in Greenwich Village and their producer Erik Jacobsen got them a recording deal with the newly formed Kama Sutra Records.Their first 45, "Do You Believe In Magic", reached number 9 in the U.They also had four cuts included on the Elektra compilation "What's Shakin'", including one called "Good Time Music".Notable for its atmospheric streetnoise sound effects, the record topped the U.The Lovin' Spoonful went on to appear on the soundtrack of the cult movie "What's Up Tiger Lily" (No.US) and their third album, "Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful", peaked at number 14.They followed this with the heavily orchestrated "Darlin' Be Home Soon", which reached number 15 in the U.In March 1967, a greatest hits LP called "The Best Of The Lovin' Spoonful" climbed to number 3 on the U.All of the group's energy was soon focused on recording their fourth LP, the very ambitious "Everything Playing"."Boredom" and "Money" in the UK and Europe."Everything Playing" and "The Best Of The Lovin' Spoonful, Vol.He too, made solo albums, but none rose above cult success.Meanwhile, Jerry Yester joined his brother Jim in The Association, Joe Butler appeared on Broadway in the rock musical Hair, while Steve Boone faded out of the music business. In the 1980s, Sebastian reformed The Modern Folk Quartet, but became best known as a producer and string arranger. In 1991, a long awaited settlement with their record company inspired Joe and Steve to contact Jerry and start up the Lovin' Spoonful again.Looking back The Lovin' Spoonful had two good years and are lovingly remembered by many for their zany image, wild sense of humour and their unique brand of goodtime music, which combined traditional folk and blues influences with the rock and roll of their era.In March of 2000, the Lovin' Spoonful was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.He also wrote the theme song for the hit TV show 'Welcome Back Kotter', which also welcomed him back on the record charts with another top ten hit.Die Hard with A Vengence' turned to Sebastian for its theme song, "Summer in the City".CLASSIC TRIVIA:

For a New York band, The Lovin' Spoonful sure sounded like a California act.But instead of becoming another chambray shirt clad country rock act they leaned more toward folk and the down home blues found in pastoral jug bands. For a New York band, The Lovin' Spoonful sure sounded like a California act.For one thing, they blended folk rock with country rock and threw in come cascading vocal harmonies a la Buffalo Springfield or The Byrds....Hear The Lovin' Spoonful and similar artists on this channel.SiteCatalyst code version: H.MemberAttribute( "cpath" ) )?MemberAttribute( "rhapXVersion" ) )?MemberAttribute( "guid" ) )? |
