'Ana'.For more than ten years, since the Pixies ended their run with a meltdown that left pretty much everyone pissed off, the chances of this group ever getting back together were basically nil.Linda Mallari as The Martinis. After finding little satisfaction in studio work, Dave Lovering gave up music entirely and began a career as a professional magician. But like star systems in an expanding universe, each of the Pixies would feel the pull, sooner or later, back toward the center, where once they had exploded and showered the musical vacuum with pointed, ironic, blackly humorous, and unforgettable songs. It took a few years twelve, to be exact. The Pixies 2004 tour was a total surprise and at the same time no surprise at all.If anything if possible they were stronger than ever, despite their tempestuous legacy.Which takes us to the real story: Unlike most miracles, their return was documented on digital film. Those who disbelieve, or who consider a Pixies resurrection too good to have actually happened, are proven wrong with Pixies Sell Out, a DVD extravaganza that captures the greatest shows from their first reunion tour. And, yes, there was a second reunion tour this year, but lets take it one miracle at a time.Typically, though, the Pixies comeback began with a burst of confusion and contradiction.Just as typically, given the patterns of communication that had helped drag the Pixies to their demise in the early nineties, it began with Frank Black and his habit of expressing wishes indirectly.Rumors persist that he had originally broken up the band by letting his colleagues know it was over via fax.It could never have happened because he isnt a confrontational guy.He couldnt fire anybody, so he just stopped talking to us.This time out, he apparently let everybody know what was on his mind by talking to the media. In an interview with Londons XFM Radio in the summer of 2003, he mused about his dreams of getting the Pixies together again.Well, Black says, coming clean at last, we never actually jammed or anything.George Harrison, who said, when asked about his bands much anticipated reunion, Hey, if we all got together and jammed in the living room, you guys in the press wouldnt even know about it.It was like the cat that was never actually in the bag was out of the bag anyway. One day he says to me, I hear the Pixies are getting back together. And that just made my whole world much better.Joe and I had agreed that if we sounded like shit, of course we wouldnt do it, Kim remembers. So I packed my stuff into a Volvo station wagon in Ohio and checked into corporate housing near Joes house. He had burned ten of our songs onto a CD, which I picked up at his house David already had all the Pixies stuff on iPod.In four days they worked up a list of forty songs, which they polished on and off through the winter, until Black was free to join them.If you have to cough, you can just cough. On my first day back with the Pixies, we took a break to get some tacos, Black recalls. It reminded me of our early days of rehearsing in some industrial place, with little amps, a minuscule P.But I knew there was a lot of muscle memory involved, and after I reviewed a little bit that night it all came right back by the next day.And by a couple of days after that we were sounding exactly the same as we had years before.Opening in Minneapolis, the Pixies tour rolled first into Canada. From the start they drew packed houses and won rapturous reviews: At one of their early shows, in Saskatoon, Pop Matters described the performance as ninety minutes of bedlam.Coachella, The New York Times reported, the day belonged to the Pixies.More important to the band was the feedback they were getting from their audiences, which was unlike anything theyd experienced. In every city, people were so happy we were there, Kim marvels. It didnt really hit me until later in the summer, when Charles, Joe, and I went to a Stooges reunion in Berlin.Dont you remember that first wave of popularity in Europe? But you guys dont remember we were all too drunk! There were lots of younger people whod never seen us before.Instead of thrusting their fists in the air and screaming along with the lyrics, the way it was the first time, there was a kind of deference. There was a lot more people standing there, really quietly, and going, Oh, so this is what its like to hear the Pixies! It was more of a religious than a military zeal. Most were extraordinarily positive: great performance from the band, enormous warmth from crowds that ranged from early teens to late forties. These were young metal fans who had no idea who we are, Frank laughs. And a few would prove unforgettable.Iceland and in Japan; their set in the lush, green setting of the Fuji Rock festival is one of the highlights of Pixies Sell Out.But for all four members of the band, the highlight of their reunion was in the dry desert heat at Coachella. It was indescribable, Kim says. But when we walked out onstage at Coachella, the sun had just begun to curve down, so it was getting cooler but it wasnt dark yet.It was more this sense of excitement that the Pixies were there.Pomona the night before, Dave continues.Coachella bands were there, so there was this feeling that it was a big event.Getting there, it was wonderful to hang with the bands backstage. It reminded me of one of the first times wed played in London, at a place called the Mean Fiddler, after Surfer Rosa had come out.The audience just shocked me.It was the same at Coachella: I hadnt ever seen that number of people with that amount of love. After Coachella, the Pixies routine that only got weirder i.We buried the hatchet, is how Santiago explains it, while Dave elaborates: Were all older and wiser, so we could deal with each other much better this time around.Other than that, there was no difference in what it was like to go on the road again.Okay, Kim explains, maybe getting a little excited. Then Id say well, I couldnt say Amboy Dukes, it would have to be Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes, so Abba? Were stuck in the As, arent we?Wed play that for four full hours and have a blast. All four agreed on the most important point of the tour: The Pixies were beating everyones expectations, including their own. Were definitely tighter, Santiago observes. And I was trying new things, using more effects in a very flavorful way.Id never done that in the past.Ive had a lot of time to think about the drum parts Id recorded with the Pixies, which I was never happy with, Dave adds. Now I understand how it goes! Now, our thing is to play as we used to.While there are subtle differences like, were probably a little more muscular as musicians we do in fact sound the same, which is mission accomplished for us.We sound the same only better."Are you sure you want to delete this comment?"Thank you for adding me on.Your music has been so dynamic to me and I am indie rock into the mainstream, they simply laid the groundwork for the alternative explosion of the early '90s.By the time Nirvana broke the doors down for alternative rock in 1992, the Pixies were effectively broken up.The Pixies were formed in Boston, MA, in 1986 by Charles Thompson and his roommate, Joey Santiago.Half way through his studies at the college, he went to Puerto Rico to study Spanish, and after six months he decided to move back to the U.Mary," the duo recruited Kim Deal (who was billed as Mrs.On the advice of Deal, the group recruited drummer David Lovering.Inspired by Iggy Pop, Thompson picked the stage name Black Francis and the group named itself the Pixies after Santiago randomly flipped through the dictionary.By the fall, the Pixies had played enough gigs to land a supporting slot for fellow Boston band Throwing Muses. At the Muses concert, Gary Smith, an artist manager and producer at Boston's Fort Apache studios, heard the group and offered to record them.In March 1987, the Pixies recorded 18 songs over the course of three days. The demo, dubbed The Purple Tape, was given to key players within the Boston musical community and the international alternative scene, including Ivo Watts, the head of England's 4AD Records.Impressed with the cassette, Watts signed the band and released eight of the demo's songs as the EP Come On Pilgrim in 1987.By the end of the year, the buzz on the Pixies had become substantial, and the group signed to Elektra Records.Released in the spring of 1989, Doolittle boasted a cleaner sound and received excellent reviews, which led to greater exposure in America."Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Here Comes Your Man" became Top Ten modern rock hits, clearing the way for Doolittle to peak at number 98 on the U.Throughout their career, the Pixies were more popular in Britain and Europe than America, as evidenced by the success of the Sex and Death tour.By the completion of their second American tour for Doolittle at the end of 1989, the group had begun to tire of each other and decided to take a hiatus during the beginning of 1990.During the hiatus, Black Francis went on a brief solo tour and Kim Deal formed a group with Tanya Donnely from the Throwing Muses and bassist Josephine Wiggs of Perfect Disaster, naming it after her teenage band, the Breeders.Pod, which appeared on 4AD in early summer 1990, shortly after the Pixies reconvened to record their third album with Gil Norton.Bossanova was greeted with decidedly mixed reviews, but the record became a college hit, generating the modern rock hits "Velouria" and "Dig for Fire" in the U.While the Pixies did cancel their planned American tour, due to "exhaustion," the band reconvened in the spring of 1991 to record its fourth album, again with Gil Norton.Upon its fall release, Trompe le Monde was hailed by some as a welcome return to the sound of Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, but closer inspection revealed that it relied heavily on sonic detail and featured very few vocals by Deal and none of her songs.During the spring of 1992, the Pixies opened for U2 on the opening leg of the Zoo TV tour; it would be their last trek through the United States.Upon the conclusion of the Zoo TV tour the Pixies went on hiatus, with Deal returning to the Breeders, who releasing the EP Safari later that spring. As he was preparing to release his solo debut, Francis gave an interview on BBC's Radio 5, announcing that the Pixies were disbanding.Inverting his stage name to Frank Black, Francis released his eponymous debut that spring to mixed reviews; over the next few years, Frank Black's audience gradually shrank to a small cult following. The album became a surprise hit, going gold in the U.Sides in the late '90s and early 2000s, those were relatively quiet years for the band's members.David Lovering left the Martinis and became the touring drummer for Cracker, and also appeared on Tanya Donelly's Sliding and Diving, but found himself unemployed in the late '90s.London dates on the Dog in the Sand tour; though this didn't happen, it at least sparked hopes that the Pixies would eventually reunite. These hopes seemed unfounded until 2003, when Black revealed in an interview that he had considered reuniting the band and that he, Deal, Santiago, and Lovering occasionally got together to jam.Soon after, it was confirmed that the Pixies would reunite in 2004 for U.Wave of Mutilation: The Best of Pixies were released by 4AD.Music and the eMusic logo are either registered trademarks or trademarks in the
