| Their youth was inspirational to guys and girls to just get out there and play.""The Runaways were one those groups that inspired just about every fan to pick up a guitar a start a band.""The Runaways made me respect AND want to work with female musicians. How would the scene be without The Runaways influence?"If it weren't for the Runaways we'd probably still be following the boys around.""The Runaways are more than just a girl rock band, they paved the way for aspiring young girls like myself to get involved in rock music."The truth is, a number of perfectly fated moments put Sandy West, Joan Jett, and Kari Krome together with Kim Fowley. The girls wanted to form an all girl rock band, and Fowley was looking for something new that happened to include rocking teenage girls. The meeting of the four began the wild journey of The Runaways. The search for a second guitarist began and Lita Ford, who originally tried out on bass, answered the call. She was hired, quit, and came back, all in a span of less than a week.Kim and Joan ran into Cherie Currie and twin sister Marie at an underage disco called The Sugar Shack.Marie was approached first but she gave a definitive no, but Cherie was more than happy to audition. They toured the world, building a loyal fan base, and released "Queens of Noise," followed by "Live In Japan."Joan took over on lead vocals and the band continued (photo 5).Fowley abruptly left and the band brought in new management. The Runaways" was released, after the departure of Vicki Blue.Laurie McAllister was brought in on bass and appears in the "Mama Weer All Crazy Now" and "Saturday Night Special" videos, but didn't have time to record with the band before the final breakup in early 1979 (photo 6).Over three decades after The Runaways' demise however, the band remains more than a short mark in the history books of rock and roll.Bands ranging from Hole to Bikini Kill and dozens more list The Runaways as major influences, and they continue to have a loyal base of rabid fans."The Runaways are real rock goddesses!"Rodneys show and was forever changed.Seeing them play at The Golden Bear in HB and having to sneak out to do it was one of my fav memories. The Runaways album came out and my 16 year old sister loved it.Christmas that year but I remember singing Cherry Bomb with my sister in our pajamas in the living room."They made it cool to be a teenager, even if my mom didn't like me cutting my hair like Bowie.Cherie's attention but I went to a show and six guys had Bowie hair. The Runaways were and still are the backbeat of my teenaged years."Site design by World Wild Tribe Productions.July 2007)
Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. This article is about the 1970s band. For other uses, see Runaway. The band is best known for the songs "Cherry Bomb," "Queens of Noise," "Neon Angels (On the Road to Ruin)" and "Born to Be Bad.""Cherry Bomb" appeared on the movie soundtracks for Dawn, Portrait of a Teenage Runaway, RV and Dazed and Confused. The Runaways were formed in late 1975 by drummer Sandy West and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett, as well as songwriter Kari Krome, who was searching for girls to perform her songs.Starting as a power trio with bassist Micki (Michael) Steele, The Runaways began the party and club circuit around Los Angeles.Bassist Micki Steele left the group, later resurfacing in the hugely successful Bangles. After some trial and error Jackie Fox (who had originally auditioned for the lead guitar spot) was added on bass and the line up was complete.Fame
The Runaways were signed to Mercury Records in 1976 and their debut album, The Runaways, was released shortly after. In the film Edgeplay: A Film About The Runaways, it was said that each girl patterned herself after her idols: Currie patterning her look after David Bowie, Jett after Suzi Quatro and Keith Richards, Ford as a cross between Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and Jeff Beck, West after Queen drummer Roger Taylor, and Fox after Kiss frontman Gene Simmons.Their second album, Queens of Noise was released in 1977 and the band began a world tour.Due to the band's constant touring, they were in the unique position of being in the middle of the punk scene as it was breaking in two different countries, thus cementing their place in punk history. In the summer of 1977 the group arrived in Japan for a string of sold out shows. The Runaways were the number 4 imported music act in Japan at the time, only trailing behind Led Zeppelin, ABBA, and Kiss in terms of album sales and popularity. While in Japan, The Runaways had their own TV special, did numerous television appearances and released a live album that went gold.Singer Cherie Currie then left the group and Jett, who previously shared vocals with Currie, took over lead vocals full time.Currie released a solo LP Beauty's Only Skin Deep, which was produced by Kim Fowley and began her own tour which included her identical twin sister Marie.Dissolution
Due to disagreements over money and the management of the band, the Runaways and Kim Fowley parted ways in 1978.In the film Edgeplay: A Film About The Runaways, members of the group (especially Fox and Currie) as well as the parents of Currie and West, have accused Fowley and others assigned to look after the band of using divide and conquer tactics to keep control of the band, as well as verbal and sexual abuse of the band members. In the film, Currie mentions an incident in which Fowley sat them on a bed in a hotel room and told them he was "going to teach them the right way to fuck."When Fox responded "Hell no!"Fowley responded by telling her she was the only one in the band who didn't, proving that the band's management was not as responsible as they claimed to be.Bassist Vicki Blue left the group and was replaced by Laurie McAllister. The Runaways disbanded in 1979."Light of Day" with Michael J.Lita Ford
Bandmate Lita Ford returned as a solo artist to Polygram in the 1980s, where she released several albums before pairing with manager Sharon Osbourne. She appeared in movies with Jodie Foster (Foxes), The Twilight Zone the Movie, and Demi Moore (Parasite) as well as others before releasing a 1978 solo album entitled Beauty's Only Skin Deep and a 1980 duet album with her sister Marie and the band Toto called Messin' With The Boys.Currie still performs and records but her current passion is chainsaw carving. She has an art gallery in California where her works are currently on display.Jackie Fox
Bassist Jackie Fox went to Harvard and became a lawyer. She has lived abroad and is an amateur photographer.Blue Band), but never released an album, though they did appear together in the film This is Spinal Tap.Emmy nomination along the way.The Runaways called Edgeplay: A Film About The Runaways. The 30th Anniversary of Saturday Night Fever (2007).The Orchids, who released one poorly received LP in 1980.She no longer performs music.Influence
The Runaways paved the way for many of today's female artists and female bands like Bikini Kill and most recently, The Donnas to enter the male dominated arena of rock 'n' roll and allow them to stand toe to toe with their counterparts.Discography

probably endured more taunts of 'get them off' than anyone yet they were a group of musicians who were both sexy and could play.In contrast great tours with bands like The Ramones, Cheap Trick
and Motorhead showed that all men weren't dickheads.Minutes() * 60 + newCurrentTime.See all 14 customer reviews...With this album, the Runaways made it crystal clear that women (or specifically, adolescent girls) were more than capable of playing intense, forceful hard rock that went directly for the jugular.Sheet music for The runaways at Sheet Music Plus.Click on a tag to find related items, discussions, and people. Why not be the first to suggest a search for which it should appear? The easiest way to shoot video reviews. One of the first girl hard rock groups, The Runaways, made their debut in 1976 with the self titled album.Lita Ford (17 years old) in lead guitar, Jackie Fox (16 years old) in bass and vocals, and Sandy West (16 years old) in drums and vocals made a huge success in Japan but not so great in America and Europe. They had one great hit "Cherry Bomb" which is defintely their best song and this album is also their best one.Your vote will be counted and will appear on the product page within 24 hours."The original girl rock album that started it all. This album is nothing short of amazing. The Runaways aren't talked about all that much is due to the fact that they only had one genuine hit in the catchy "Cherry Bomb" that is on this album.Their subsequent solo careers (moreso Joan Jett's for longevity's sake) eclipsed what they did with The Runaways back in the day.The fact that The Runaways were presented as nothing but sex symbols by their lable and producer to a certain extent kept them from really getting taken seriously at the time this album originally came out in 1976 (which is funny since they were all 16 with the exception of Lita Ford who was 17 at the time this record was made).Go's mainly due to their more astronomical popularity and more streamlined sound as the first real "Girl Rock" group, but The Runaways were doing it before they were.Just see any interview with the current all girl rock band The Donna's for proof of that. But taken into context that these girls were just teenagers at the time, it's really hard to not get caught up in the sheer fun presented throughout this whole album. While The Runaways would record 2 more studio alubms (with slightly different lineups), they would be forgotten and written off before Joan Jett and Lita Ford would begin very successful solo careers.First off, let me say that I love this band.LP when it first came out in the 70's.The Runaways were far ahead of their time.Published 18 months ago by D.SEXY INNOVATORS OF GIRL ROCK AT SIXTEEN YEARS OLD
