too subtle to make a difference, or simply serve to muddy the mix.The strength of The Warlocks comes in its ability to revel in black light psychedelia without indulging in the brooding atmosphere so often associated with it.California and psych rock.The two go together like milk and honey.One of the many current bands plying a psych rock sound in Cali (Los Angeles, to be exact) is the Warlocks.The Warlocks are one of those bands.After an uneventful foray into (semi)major label territory and the hardly mentionable album, Surgery that was the result, it seems that The Warlocks are heading back towards their former promise.I'd always been a fan of the band's ..Even when the group returns to their old sound on the caveman rock of "Zombie Like Lovers" (which bears more than a passing resemblence to the group's own "Come Save Us" from 2005's "Surgery" album), they do it more effectively than ever before.Frontman by Bobby Hecksher makes this a rhetorical question begging no answer."So Paranoid" is more of a spiritual sojourn with a pleasing, melodic consistency complete with Hecksher's faint whispery vocals.For those who consider experimental, avant rock of the psychedelic variety to be essential to the progression of the rock genre, then The Warlocks is simply a band that cannot be overlooked.As mentioned, the group has never hesitated at jumping into the fray with some long, psychedelic jams.But they have certainly never produced anything as consistently deep and dark as that of Heavy Deavy Skull Lover.For fans, it might take a few listens, but the latest chapter for The Warlocks is as satisfying as ever.The Warlocks are confirmed for the Tunnel Vision festival in the UK!Dressed in their customary black, the members of the Warlocks are lurking in the shadows of the swirls of fog, strobe lights like heat lightning.The Warlocks are masters of these ebbs and flows, and that gives a seamless fluidity to their live set.They're like the ocean, pulling away and then crashing back down on the beach.The Warlocks need to be heard live to be really appreciated.Bobby Hecksher intones, "Los Angeles, oh, my beautiful home, weird, and warped and fucked up."The Sisters would be better off not trying to follow the Warlocks.Their sound seems emaciated and muted compared to the neon, voluptuous hymns the Warlocks pummeled us with.Especially when the sound check has gone rather bumpy, the lead singer has a bad case of anxiety, the keyboardist has walked off in tears as a result of an argument with him and the rest of the band is feeling frustrated because their guest lists have all been cut.The dichotomy here being the songs they actually do manage to sound check come off as a polished wall of psychedelic sound making you forget all the aforementioned drama.It is these moments that make journalism a bit nerve wracking.I'll be interviewing since everyone seems to have some kind of dilemma.Hecksher cares what I think.At no point during this entire interview does Hecksher manage to stay seated for more than two minutes.He looks down at his hands somewhat somberly and I try to comfort in a way remarking on the pressure of being the central member of a band while trying to maintain the delicate balance of making sure that your fellow band members feel appreciated.It is obvious Bobby knows he is a talented musician but he's also aware that his talent comes with a dose of neurotic spaciness which he humorously credits his mother for.The thing is we're on two separate worlds.So I keep telling her, 'Stop it with the advice on music, Mom.The apprehension is still lingering but he seems to be talking with a bit more ease.Due to all the activity during this interview (Bobby has changed his shoes, made a vitamin drink, poured me a shot of vodka, turned off the television, made two phone calls, stretched, played with his hair and continuously paced back and forth) I wonder if I have captured enough actual
