| It breeds in coniferous forests throughout the most northern parts of Europe, Asia and western North America. The preferred nest is usually high in a pine tree but feeding opportunities determine the location ultimately chosen. On average, 4 to 6 eggs are laid, the egg shells having a pale bluish color with a heavy sprinkling of blackish spots and some dark, irregular lines.Like other waxwings, its diet consists primarily of berries supplemented by insects, especially during the breeding season. This species is irruptive, moving in unpredictable migration patterns from year to year, and particularly moving south, often in huge numbers, if the berry supply fails in winter.Gallery

and the Beach Boys.Cranking up the distortion and digging into fuzzy retro grooves on tracks like "Wired That Way" and "Rifle Through," the Waxwings here sound more like the White Stripes than the Wondermints. But the group's unflappable sense of melody remains, particularly on the hushed "Look Down Darkly" and the shimmying "Fractured," while the score of baroque instruments and string don't give up on it if you were unrealistically expecting the same musical magic that is heard on LTTG.Which isn't a bad thing. But it is on one of the quieter tunes that The Waxwings push up to the level of their debut. It is one fantastic tune and just may make the entire album worth the purchase for those that could not get enough of LTTG.Track 7 "Fractured" is another rocker, in the style of early 70's Rolling Stones, with Keith Richard's like guitar licks and good harmonies.Especially after the downright perfect tune that ends The Waxwings debut, "It Comes In Waves".This is perhaps the biggest disappointment with "Shadow Of"...And it just isn't there."Shadow Of The Waxwings" is an interesting album indeed.Upon first listen it disappoints as compared to The Waxwings phenomenal Amazon. And as for its place in the novel, it may not seem to make much sense as you're reading it in terms of what the bookjacket or a review led you to think the novel is about, but once you've gotten into the heart of the novel, those opening pages read much differently. So much for the book's weaknesses. The other character, Chick, is drawn more starkly but just as sharply. His dialogue is short and sharp and his language is stripped of all of Tom's pretensions and floweriness.Chick is all lift and action and aspiration.Thematically, the book's richness starts on page one and continues all the way to the waxwings image which closes the book.As far as that ending, I personally don't find it to be quite the neat resolution that some have said, or quite the obvious message as others have mentioned. Was this review helpful to you?Great fiction writers make stuff up.This review posted originally on NadaMucho.Published on December 17, 2003 by Todd M.Published on October 31, 2003 by
