artist believes in, one in which the artist actually means what he's singing. They can tell when it's jive. When we negotiated the deal with ABC, we put in a clause that they couldn't sell the contract band metamorphosed into the Epics and, eventually, Mudcrutch.Never one to give up, Petty enlisted Mudcrutch members Tench (keyboards) and Mike Campbell (guitar), along with Gainesville musicians Ron Blair (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums) to form the now famous lineup that was dubbed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They released their first album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in November 1976.In 2006, the band will celebrate the 30th anniversary of that release. The Heartbreakers, because Mudcrutch, the band that Mike and Benmont and I had just before that, got burned so badly. And I wanted to his bits, and send it to me.Graham Lifetime Achievement Award (1998), Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1999), Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame induction (2002), R.No, I don't really think that way when I write.I've got to come up with some more music,' and then kind of hope and pray that one of the batch, or two or three or four of the batch, will be hits. What about the Traveling Wilburys? In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Petty joined legends Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison as one fifth of the Traveling Wilburys.Roy had just come on the scene, because Jeff was going to do a track with Roy .The first day I met Roy, Jeff and I and Roy wrote that song You Got It.Anything you want, you got it...So everybody knew each other. And when he got the record on, he felt it wasn't really a George Harrison record, it's more of a group. So what do you say we have a group? It was really fun being in that band.Elvis Presley, when I was 11.From that point on, music became my religion, my nourishment. It was also a safe haven for me.My life was very turbulent as a child and a little scary, and music made everything seem right. It has also pulled me through some other dark times.Being so independent, as Tom ever considered eliminating the record companies and releasing his records himself?Beatles would release up to three albums a year. What is Tom Petty's Buried Treasure?Tom hosts from one of rock's most legendary yet still underrated groups, covering Petty's career from 1976 up through 1993.Of course, Petty has released several classic albums since this GH CD was released, but this album provides fans unfamiliar with the consistency and strength of Petty's early years the chance to see that something good did indeed emerge from the musical doldrums of the 1970s.America took notice of the first single Breakdown and the rock classic American Girl. You're Gonna Get It was released in 1978 and supplies the tracks Listen To Her Heart and I Need to Know. It's hard to believe Refugee maxed out at number 15 in the US charts, as the song was all over the airwaves at the time.Heartbreakers as they truly began to establish a rock 'n' roll legacy.Three years of work paid off when Southern Accents was released in 1985.It's a great album, even though only one track from the album appears on this GH collection.Full Moon Fever (1989) made Petty a legend with hits such as I Won't Back Down (featuring fellow Wilbury George Harrison), Runnin' Down a Dream, and Free Fallin'.Into the Great Wide Open (1991) kept the ball rolling with hits such as the title track and Learning to Fly.Mary Jane's Last Dance (and its accompanying video featuring Kim Basinger) was a big hit, while Something In the Air is a great song obviously influenced by Petty's recent collaborations with Jeff Lynne and George Harrison in the guise of the Traveling Wilburys. There are more inclusive Petty collections out there these days, but if you want the heart and soul of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on one CD, the 18 tracks on Greatest Hits will serve you quite well indeed. Was this review helpful to you?LP confirms, Tom Petty has straddled new wave attitude with classic rock
