6.History
Violent Femmes was founded by bassist Brian Ritchie and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo. The group quickly gained following that never veered into mainstream commercialism."Add It Up", "Blister in the Sun", "Gone Daddy Gone", "Kiss Off", and "Please Do Not Go".After their debut album, Violent Femmes released Hallowed Ground, which moved the group towards a country music sound and introduced spiritual themes."Children of the Revolution," originally by T.The group disbanded, with Gano releasing an album in 1987, the result of a gospel side project Mercy Seat.Ritchie also released several solo LPs.New Times (Elektra Records) was released in 1994, and Rock!!!!!In 2002, Rhino Records repackaged the Femmes' debut 1983 album along with demos and live tracks to coincide with a 20th anniversary reissue.Otherwise from Rhino, which showcases a concert performance from 1991, along with many of the group's videos. On New Year's Eve of 2005, and for one show in January of 2006, all four Violent Femmes members played together."Blister in the Sun" to Wendy's Hamburgers.Neither Gordon (vegetarian) nor me (gourmet) eat garbage like Wendy's burgers.Horns of Dilemma
In their shows, the Femmes employ a horn section called the Horns of Dilemma. For many years, it consisted of Peter Balestrieri and Steve MacKay, from the Stooges, on saxophones, with Sigmund Snopek III on keyboards and various instruments. It was augmented by whatever musicians the band invited to play with them on a particular night. The band also employs local acquaintances, famous or otherwise, friends, relatives, or associates of the band.Famous members have included John Zorn, Dick Parry, Blaise Garza and The Dresden Dolls.Various bassists stand in for Ritchie during "Gone Daddy Gone," when he plays xylophone. In 1991, author Audrey Niffenegger attended a Violent Femmes concert at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. She later incorporated this concert into an episode in her novel, The Time Traveler's Wife.It was at this concert that the ballroom floor collapsed during the Femmes' performance. It was the the Violent Femmes and the The Del Fuegos..."Called Life Blister In The Sun was used for Angela's freedom dance in the 17th episode Betrayal. In 1996 the band made a guest appearance on the Elliott Murphy album Selling The Gold. The song "Good Feeling" is referred to on the TV show How I Met Your Mother as the "song" of Marshall and Lily."Blister 2000" was recorded specifically for the soundtrack.Studio albums

personification of anxiety.These
are just a few of the phrases that come to mind upon thinking of the
Femmes.Ritchie calls the songs onstage).Luckily for them the Pretenders saw the band begging for
spare change and asked them to open the show for them. All three of
them sing their hearts out for almost the entire show.In his spare time he is a connoisseur of the finest espresso

of polyglot epics.The
drum stool is shared by Milwaukeeans Victor DeLorenzo and John Sparrow,
except that neither uses a stool and they barely play drums.Sparrow plays the cajon, a
percussion box from Peru.VF wanted to beef up 2 and 4.Sparrow
is part of the ragtag sidekicks known as the Horns of Dilemma.Eugene Chadbourne (avant guitar wiz), Hani Naser (Arabic percussion
expert) and a cast of thousands. The hilarity they bring keeps the

Violent Femmes are playing the role of international troubadours,
playing songs from all of their albums, and bringing the rock to every
nook and cranny of the globe.Victor, "What ocean is that?"Chilton told Brian, "Hi Lou."Those wacky 60's rockstars!Plant said the Femmes were one of his favorite
bands. The Femmes did a gig with Bob Dylan.Iggy said, "I have never heard them.""Add It Up" telling him there were only two chords."That's one chord too many!"The Femmes showed up at a gig in L.VF were puzzled what he was doing there. The Femmes asked Tom Waits to produce one of their albums. He said, "OK", then never returned the Femmes calls.Femmes ended up playing first.Gano said, "They don't pick on him because he
is big."The Femmes were eating dinner at Doyle's Seafood in Sydney.Brian
Ritchie played it for Femmes recording engineer David Vartanian and
Horns of Dilemma member Sigmund Snopek III, saying it was a demo of
Gordon's new songs.Although Dave and Sig had both been working with
the Femmes for over a decade they couldn't tell that it was not Gordon.Gordon wrote "Country Death Song" in the tenth grade studyhall. When Nirvana opened for the Femmes in Australia singer Kurt Cobain
refused to go onstage unless someone got him some drugs.Kurt hit the stage, saying,"I
feel much better."The Femmes played at the North Pole with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. When former Talking Head Jerry Harrison produced the Femmes, Gordon
was shocked to find him drinking from a little bottle clearly
marked,"For External Use Only."When the Femmes worked with producer Michael Beinhorn (Chili Peppers,
Soundgarden, Soul Asylum, etc.Gordon told them he would play an
innocuous song, but instead the duo performed "Gimme the Car."When the Femmes did an acoustic show at Warner Bros.Records to
celebrate the release of "Why Do Birds Sing?"They told the audience, "We just
played at Carnegie Hall."Obviously Biggs
could not tell the difference between a piano and a banjo.Biggs later took the master tape of "Do You Really Want To HurtMe?"In an interview with the L.Weekly Biggs admitted that he couldn't
remember much of the eighties because he was on drugs all the time.Vice President Karin Berg once told the puzzled Femmes,
"Biggs' strengths are his weaknesses."The audience was climbing on the elephants and
the museum was strewn with used condoms.Rodman poured a beer over Gordon's head, but Gordon didn't retaliate
because Gordon is small and Rodman is very big.Brian put his bass
neck into Rodman's ass.The Femmes were paid nothing for that gig.Another Jazz great, Don Cherry, called Brian and asked if he could
sit in with the horns of dilemma. He listened to it over and over on his tour bus.Ra told Femmes
promoter Peter Jest, "I love it when the teenagers sing about me."Yet another Jazz great, Bassist Percy Heath of the Modern Jazz
Quartet came to an early Femmes show and came backstage to try Brian's
trademark acoustic bass guitar. That shit the other cats play is just a toy."Pop songstress Jewel came into the Femmes dressing room and posed the
question,"Would you rather be a fish or a star?"To the chagrin of the assembled
journalists they responded,"We don't think the question is whether
there should be one or two Germanies, but rather if there should be any
Germany."The Femmes were going through Canadian customs when they were
approached by bald TV excercise and diet guru Susan Powter. So, what do you think, should Joni
Mitchell be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?"The entire band and
crew replied with a scornful,"No!!!"He was woken by a kick in the shin and a fruity
voice yelling,"Come on, look lively, it's too early in the morning to
be taking a nap!!!"Femmes were playing "Confessions" at a club in D.When they looked behind them they realized
why.Sigmund Snopek III was blowing a hunting horn completely nude.Horns of Dilemma sax man Peter Balestrieri had seen Brian jump into
the audience and get passed around by the crowd and wanted to try it
for himself.Angelo
asked, "Brian, do you ever see angels?"When she was rescued
the journalists asked her how she kept up her spirits during the
ordeal. She replied,"By singing songs from the Violent Femmes album,
"Hallowed Ground".The club had giant statues of frogs playing musical
instruments on the roof. The clubowner told the band,"This is not good
music.The band refused and performed
anyway. They were shocked when they looked in the crowd and saw singing
legend Tony Bennett. The Femmes went to a sushi bar in L.Another time Ritchie went to the same sushi bar, but when he sat down
they started playing the Femmes on the stereo. She said,"What's wrong,
don't you like the Femmes?"Ritchie told the confused waitress,"No, i
love the Femmes, in fact I've been to every one of their shows!"Recorded live in London, July 7, 1991.Femmes, all the
