Visit the wetlands website to learn how and why wetlands should be part of watershed management. Also available is Article 1, 2, 3 and 6 of the article series. In short, the manual provides all the resources needed to develop an effective local retrofit program. The Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination Guidance Manual is the comprehensive result of a research project between the Center for Watershed Protection and Dr.Robert Pitt of the University of Alabama.Local watershed groups can also use this tool by determining how their community compares to others and work with their local governments to encourage adoption of practices that would improve scores.Hard copies will be made available for purchase in Feb 2008.Store for links to our publications, guidance manuals, Center gear, and even free resources!Resources for your Community Access this page for helpful resources for educating your community about ways they can protect their local streams with rain barrels, dog waste pickup and other pollution prevention ideas!Get the latest Center project news, a jump on new technical information, and updates on all the latest Center work in our quarterly electronic newsletter, Runoff Rundown.Become a Friend of the Center!Help for Watershed Groups!Part of a small watershed organization? We've got stuff for you!Permission for reproduction required. The drainage basin includes both the streams and rivers that convey the water as well as the land surfaces from which water drains into those channels. Each drainage basin is separated topographically from adjacent basins by a ridge, hill or mountain, which is known as a water divide or a watershed.Especially in North American usage however, watershed refers to the drainage basin itself.Ocean basins There are numerous drainage basins throughout the world. The basin of the Arctic Sea drains most of northern Canada and Russia. Its basin includes much of China, southeastern Russia, Japan, Korea, most of Indonesia and Malaysia, the Philippines, all Pacific Islands, the northeast coast of Australia, most of Alaska, the western part of Canada, the United States, Central America, and the South America (the smaller portion west of the Andes).Antarctica comprises approximately eight percent of the Earth's land.Other basins include the Great Basin in the United States, much of the Sahara Desert, the watershed of the Okavango River (Kalahari Basin), highlands near the African Great Lakes, the interiors of Australia and the Arabian Peninsula, and parts in Mexico and the Andes. For example, the English crown gave the Hudson's Bay Company a monopoly on the Indian Trade in the entire Hudson Bay watershed, an area called Rupert's Land.Currently the Sistan Basin stretches over the southern parts of Afghanistan and Iran.Shangrila Lake in Skardu Pakistan.Rain gauge data is used to measure total precipitation over a drainage basin, and there are different ways to interpret that data.In the Thiessen polygon method, the watershed is divided into polygons with the rain gauge in the middle of each polygon assumed to be representative for the rainfall on the area of land included in its polygon. The Mississippi River drains the largest area of any U.As water flows over the ground and along rivers it can pick up nutrients, sediment, and pollutants.Like the water, they get transported towards the outlet of the basin, and can affect the ecological processes along the way as well as in the receiving water source.Modern usage of artificial fertilizers, containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, has affected the mouths of watersheds. The minerals will be carried by the watershed to the mouth and accumulate there, disturbing the natural mineral balance. In resource management Further information: Watershed management Because drainage basins are coherent entities in a hydrological sense, it has become common to manage water resources on the basis of individual basins.Minnesota, governmental entities that perform this function are called watershed districts. In North America this function is referred to as watershed management.Watersheds: Processes, Assessment and Management. This page was last modified 18:11, 16 January 2008.Michigan Watershed InformationThe Michigan Watershed Homepage offers information and education materials to help local watershed groups and communities protect and improve Michigan's lakes and streams. To protect your rivers, protect your mountains.Everyone lives in a watershed.Watersheds (basic information) Watershed Mgmt.Does Urbanization Change a Watershed? What is a Watershed? It is separated from other systems by high points in the area such as hills or slopes. One way people influence watersheds is by changing where stormwater flows. When it rains, the rainwater flows overland into waterways or it is absorbed by the ground or plants. This process of water recycling, known as the water cycle, repeats itself continuously.Contrary to popular belief, aquifers are not flowing underground streams or lakes. One way people influence ground water is by changing where stormwater flows. It can also eliminate the need to develop a new water supply.New wells and reservoirs are expensive and time consuming to locate and build. How Does Urbanization Change a Watershed? It changes how water flows in the watershed and what flows in the water.Without the plants to store and slow the flow of stormwater, the rate of stormwater runoff is increased. These are frequently located along the curbs of parking lots and roadways. This can significantly add to water quality problems.Anything dumped in our stormwater collection systems will be carried into our streams.Landscape with the environment in mind.New Jersey's water resources.Avoid the overuse of fertilizers and do not apply them before a heavy rainfall.Use natural and less toxic alternatives whenever possible.WASHING: Wash your car only when necessary.Consider using a commercial car wash that recycles its wash water.Avoid adding unnecessary grease, household hazardous products and solids to your septic system.DISCHARGES: Dumping boat sewage overboard introduces bacteria and viruses into the water. What is a Watershed? What is a Watershed?Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes. No matter where you are, you're in a watershed!
