life is focused on God and on our fellowship with him and other
people. However Christian experience is that our
relationships with other people must be put into the context of a
relationship with God, or those relationships will start to become
unbalanced. For many Christians, worship is at the heart of our relationship
with God, both as individuals and a community. In worship we focus on
God: on hearing a message based on the Bible, on prayer, and on the
sacraments.Of course individual Christians can do many of these
things in private. However in worship we ground our life as a
community in a corporate experience of God.It is not possible to give a complete description of Christian
worship.Congregations worship in quite different ways.Worship tends to have two major centers: the Word and the
Sacraments. This includes readings from the Bible, and
a sermon, which will normally help the congregation understand the
reading and apply it to them.Historically, the sermon was a major
means of conducting adult Christian education, and of spurring both
individuals and congregations to make necessary changes. This appetite does not seem to have
survived into the 20th Century.Of course Catholic worship also includes readings from the Bible
and some exposition. This is normally referred to as a "homily",
rather than a sermon. However the center of worship in the Catholic
church, as well as other "liturgical" churches, is the sacrament of
Communion, which will be discussed below. For them it is normally
celebrated at every regular service.Services often begin with a combination of prayer, responsive
readings and music which simply celebrate being in God's presence.Fairly early in the service there is normally a prayer of
confession. In confession we express both our individual faults and
those of the community. We ask God to help us to amend them, and
receive assurance (normally in words taken from the Bible) of God's
willingness to do so.In Supplication we ask God for what we need.In worship, this
supplication normally includes the needs of the congregation, nation,
and world. The one aspect of worship which is most specific to Christianity
is the sacraments. That's because the definition of
sacrament is somewhat different among different groups. However a
good general definition is that a sacrament is "an outward and visible
sign of an inward and spiritual grace" (from the Anglican Book of
Common Prayer). It's probably best to think of a range of actions that can be
described as sacraments. At the center we have Baptism and Communion,
which are practiced by all Christian groups (although some call them
"ordinances" rather than "sacraments").These are actions that were
specifically commanded by Jesus. One medieval writer identified
30.That list includes Baptism,
Communion, Confirmation, Penance, Annointing of the Sick, Holy Orders,
and Marriage.Luther
was willing to accept Penance, if properly understood. Finally, note that many other activities have at least some
sacramental character: for Christians, the whole world, and our own
activities, should all serve to make visible God's activity with us.As an example, Calvin identified the rainbow as having a certain
sacramental quality: it is a visible sign of a promise of God.It
involves water: depending upon the group, it may be anything from a
symbolic sprinkling to complete immersion. The water symbolizes being
cleansed from sin.More specifically, it symbolizes dying with Christ
and being raised with him.Communion is a symbolic meal, involving bread and wine. This meal seems to have been a Jewish
Passover Seder, in which bread and wine are key elements.Jesus commanded his followers to
remember his death for them by eating bread and drinking wine in his
name.Different Christian groups understand Christ's presence in
communion differently. While some Protestants understand this
as purely metaphorical, most Christians believe that Jesus is in some
way present in communion. For Catholics this involves an actual metaphysical change in the
bread and wine.Lutherans believe that
there is an actual identification of bread and wine with Christ's body
and blood.Other Protestants take a more metaphorical approach. That is because they are actually Jesus' body and blood, so
Jesus really is physically present. For that reason, it is perfectly
appropriate to worship the consecrated elements.Worship usually refers to specific acts of religious praise, honour, or devotion, typically directed to a supernatural being such as God, a god or goddess.Religious worship may be performed individually, in informally organized groups, or as part of an organized service with a designated leader (as in a church, synagogue, temple, or mosque).Saxon worthscripe), worship may sometimes refer to actions directed at members of higher social classes (such as lords or monarchs) or to particularly esteemed persons (such as a lover).Typical acts of worship

2.Overview
Throughout most centuries of Church history, Christian worship has been primarily liturgical, characterized by prayers and hymns , whose texts were rooted in, or closely related to, the Scripture, and particularly the Psalter.Set times for prayer during the day were established (based substantially on Jewish models), and a festal cycle throughout the Church year governed the celebration of feasts and holy days pertaining to the events in the life of Jesus, the lives of the saints, and aspects of the Church's perception of God.To alter the patterns and content of worship were to change the faith itself. Thus even though there was always a certain amount of variety in the early Church's liturgical worship, there was also a great deal of unity. Each time a heresy arose in the Church, it was typically accompanied by a shift in worship for the heretical group.Orthodoxy in faith also meant orthodoxy in worship, and vice versa. Thus, unity in Christian worship was understood to be a fulfilment of Jesus' words that the time was at hand when true worshippers would worship "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:23).Early Church Fathers
The very early development of Christian worship is lost in the mists of history, but Christian worship is, in general, rooted in the worship of Judaism of the Second Temple period. The Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles present the very early Christians, then still very much a part of the Jewish scene, as frequenting both the Temple and synagogues, as well as worshipping in private homes, frequently to "break bread," a term which connotes both the sharing of a meal and, within that context, celebrating the Eucharist.Psalms and hymns based on them were a regular feature of Jewish worship in the synagogues, and these were also incorporated into Christian hymns.Reformation liturgies
Worship as singing underwent great changes for some Christians with the Protestant Reformation. This was expanded upon by John Knox (see Presbyterian worship); only Psalms were sung, and they were sung A cappella. The Calvinist Regulative Principle of Worship distinguishes traditional Presbyterian and Reformed churches from the Lutheran or other Protestant churches. In general, worship for the Eastern churches and for the Catholic and Anglican churches in the West is centered in regular celebration of the Lord's Supper, celebrated by a priest with more or less participation from the whole body of believers present. This tradition, variously known as the Mass, Divine Liturgy, Eucharist or Communion, continues in the Anglican branch of the church and among some Protestants.Scripture, and usually song and some form of teaching or sermon. In many Protestant traditions, however, Communion is celebrated only occasionally or not at all, and corporate worship is centered on a formal sermon, which may resemble a lecture or a passionate exhortation.Worship in such a context also generally is defined by spoken prayer (either spontaneous or prepared), liturgical recitations, Scripture, and music, particularly hymns.Generally, although not always, worship of the former kind follows the rubrics set out by authority in a prayer book or similar guide, while worship of the latter kind either is spontaneous or follows socially defined norms and the tastes of the minister or other individual who is leading the service. In virtually all Christian traditions, this regular public worship is complemented by other forms of worship, such as individual meditation, prayer and study, small group prayer (often linked with Bible study), and formal ceremonies on special occasions, including weddings, funerals and events of Church or state. This short section requires expansion.John Chrysostom

In worship, Christians pray a lot. These are all a part of prayer in worship.Worship in the
mode of the liturgical churches shows a full vision of prayer.Truth be told, many Christians don't really believe that the
prayers said in a worship service have effectiveness and power. In worship, the pastor or worship leader often speaks a
prayer on behalf of all of those gathered. But the worship
leader is not to do this alone. Those present are to pray along
with their leader, so that all are joined together in prayer. These sort of prayers are often printed beforehand in the
bulletin each person receives when they arrive. The Bible is brimming with music, song, chant, refrains, and
commemoration. The Hebrew poetry of the Prophets and Writings
lends itself to being sung. The Psalms are really worship
lyrics, gathered in a hymnal of sorts. The most natural setting for most of these
Biblical lyrics is in worship. It translates roughly to 'Praise YHWH'.Not all Christians have supported the use of instruments.Philip Pfatteicher paraphrases

Worship can include praying, reading God's Word with an open heart, singing, participating in communion, and serving others.Worship and praise are reserved only for God.We are not to worship saints, prophets, statues, idols, angels, or any other false gods.We shouldn't worship for the expectation of something in return, such as a miraculous healing.Worship is done for God, and God's pleasure alone!Worship can be public praise to God (Psalm 22:22, 35:18), in a congregational setting, where we can proclaim through music and praise our adoration and thankfulness to Him and what He has done for us.True worship is felt inwardly, and then comes out through our actions."Going through the motions" out of obligation is unpleasing to God, and is done completely in vain. They both brought gift offerings to the Lord, but He was only pleased with Abel's.Cain brought the gift out of obligation. The Heart of David
