Mark O'Connor had performed the previous night at the Grand Ole Opry House. They have just released their second collaborative CD, "Appalachian Journey" (Sony Classical).Ma is one of the most famous classical musicians of the modern day.Together, they explore the common ground between classical and American folk music. It is a format that leaves room for dazzling displays of virtuosity, and can take the listener from a pastoral mountain ballad to what seems like breathless jazz improvisation in just moments."Listen to the Storyteller," Edgar Meyer was quick to point out that the producers and the actors who spoke on the album were actually the ones responsible for winning the award.Meyer said in a recent interview.According to Meyer, the music he plays has different overtones depending on the players. And the list of artists with whom Meyer has played is quite long.Yo Ma, Meyer has been called a "chameleon of styles."His father, the late Ed Meyer, resurrected the string instrumental music program for the Oak Ridge schools in the late 1960s.It was under Ed Meyer that Edgar first began studying bass at age 5.Meyer cited living in the community of scientists as one of the reasons that made Oak Ridge a great place in which to grow up.Despite spending about half the year touring, Meyer is still a frequent visitor to Oak Ridge as his mother, Anna Mary Meyer, is an Oak Ridge resident. This is virgin musical territory. The interviewer's answer to Ma's question: "I don't know.""It's hard for us to describe it, too."When the three of you got together, what were you going for musically?Meyer: I don't really specify goals when I set out. Most of the things I do are an exploratory process, and I find a lot of things along the way.Yo and Mark is what I consider starting with a very good hand. But immediately any category diminishes the thing that you're describing. There are several songs on "Appalachian Journey" inspired by children, including a song by James Taylor for his son, and a lullaby sung by Alison Krauss.Music should be generational and communal. You've just built a wall, and it's a protectionist wall.It has nothing to do with the reality of things. But isn't much of commercial music used to express the separation of generations, like rock 'n' roll?Actually, you're diminishing the person who is in receivership of the music. Is there nothing more to you?Meyer: One of the things that's nice about instrumental music is the lack of absolute meaning to it.To open my own mind, first of all.The question that it begs for me is, 'How meaningful is that distinction?Hours() * 3600 + currentTime.Join Amazon Prime today.See all 3 customer reviews...Data based on the checkboxed items...Take the 'phone off the hook, close the windows, light the fire, draw music, later becoming a top Nashville session musician.Mark's name could be found in the list of credits of hundreds of country music albums released in the eighties.Such was his reputation that Mark could have spent the rest of his working life making a good living that way, but he wanted to make an impact with his own music. He certainly achieved that with this album, where he usually plays the fiddle but he plays the violin (same instrument with a different playing technique) on two tracks and the mandolin (different instrument) on another. The music on this album and Appalachian journey is very different from anything else I've come across.Of the two, I slightly prefer Appalachian journey, but that may be because it has more of a country influence. Was this review helpful to you? |
